Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. -- The outcome of a tightly contested dual match between highly ranked teams in NCAA Division II came down to the result at No. 6 singles, and No. 5-ranked Midwestern State edged No. 11-ranked Washburn, 4-3, at Genesis Topeka Southwest on Saturday afternoon.
With the dual match knotted, 3-3, Alessia Dolce of Midwestern State was able to rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Isabella Marensson at No. 6 singles.
The Ichabods claimed the early lead by winning matches at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. No. 13-ranked Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga pulled out a 7-6 (2) victory over Leonie Floeth and Peyton Koper of Washburn at No. 2 doubles.
The lead was short-lived for Washburn as No. 6-ranked Binzari blitzed Rensek Ubachs at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Hannah Yip put the Mustangs in front with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory at No. 1 singles.
No. 8-ranked Sofia Giraldo was upended in a close match at No. 3 singles by Daniela Tijaro, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-5, as the Ichabods pulled even in the dual, 2-2.
Anda Ghinga won in straight sets over Saajida Razick, 7-6 (7), 6-3, and MSU reclaimed the lead in the dual match, 3-2.
Peyton Koper won the point at No. 5 singles for the Ichabods with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Camila Garcia, and the dual match was knotted again, 3-3.
With Dolce taking the third set from Marensson, Midwestern State improved to 2-0 with wins on back-to-back days over Rockhurst and Washburn.
The Mustangs are scheduled to host Cowley College for a scrimmage at MSU Tennis Center on Tuesday. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
