OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- No. 19-ranked Midwestern State opened its season on Friday by winning a close dual match with Rockhurst, 4-3, at Overland Park Racquet Club.
Killian Guillou clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 pasting of Creed Skinner at No. 5 singles.
The Mustangs trailed at the conclusion of doubles.
Guillou and Justin Van Amerongen fell at No. 3 doubles to Arnav Gannavaram and Josef Truhlar, 7-5, as the Hawks took the first point of the day.
Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula won their match at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, to give MSU a chance to win the doubles point after Louis Keiner and Alex Tikhonov beat Bruno Sanchez and Germano Setti in the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3.
No. 16-ranked Sanchez pulled the Mustangs even with a match tiebreak victory at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 10-3, defeating No. 21-ranked Louis Keiner.
Filip Vacula put the Stang Gang in front with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over No. 10-ranked Semyon Tsyrenov at No. 1 singles.
Alex Tikhonov of Rockhurst rallied past Slocombe and took a point with a match-tiebreak victory at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.
Setti reclaimed the lead for MSU by winning a tightly contested match with Truhlar at No. 3 singles, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-7.
Diego Schtulmann dropped the first set to Philip Kamara at No. 6 singles, 6-1, but forced a match tiebreak with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Schtulmann slipped past Kamara with a 10-8 victory in the match tiebreak, but Guillou had already secured the MSU victory with his victory at No. 5 singles.
Midwestern State travels to Topeka for another challenging dual match on Saturday at No. 8-ranked Washburn. First serve at Genesis Topeka Southwest is at noon.
