Mustangs take control early, defeat Sul Ross State, 75-63

ALPINE, TX -- Midwestern State jumped out to 9-0 lead as Reggie Hill made his first two shots from 3-point range. Will Shepherd also hit a shot from beyond the arc in the opening minute, and Midwestern State never relinquished the lead in a 75-63 victory over Sul Ross State at the Gallego Center on Thursday night.

The Mustangs (16-5, 11-4) had three players score in double figures. Mason Gibson led the scoring attack with 21 points. Pierre Sanders added 18 points, and Reggie Hill chipped in 13 points for the Mustangs, who shot 47 percent from the field, including 9-of-24 from 3-point distance.

Hill was 3-of-4 and Sanders was 3-of-5 from long distance. Gibson was 9-of-16 from the field and hit two of his four shots from 3-point range.

Midwestern State forced 13 Sul Ross State turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor for Midwestern State. 

How It Happened

Midwestern State shot 16-of-31 from the field in the first half, and Hill finished the half with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Sanders hit all five of his free throws, and the Mustangs were 6-of-6 the foul line in the first half. MSU led Sul Ross State after 20 minutes, 43-35.

Following intermission, Midwestern State kept widening the margin, expanding it to 51-41 before going on an 8-0 run to take a 59-41 lead with 12:34 to go in the contest. Gibson, Sanders and Bakari Lastrap combined to score 28 of the 32 second-half points for the Mustangs.Lastrap scored seven of his nine points in the second half.
