Mustangs look to maintain momentum as UTPB visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State used a dominant second half to defeat Angelo State on Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 77-70, and the Mustangs are hosting UT Permian Basin on Friday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Terrance Ramirez ignited the Mustangs by hitting 7-of-9 shots from 3-point range and scoring 25 points against the Rams. Tehshaundre Cole finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Midwestern State (3-3, 1-0) shot 47.3 percent from the field and finished 12 of 26 from beyond the arc as it opened up the conference campaign with an impressive win, improving to 3-1 under the dome.

Ramirez, a junior guard from Grapevine, Texas, is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 14 points per game, while senior swingman Jonathan Jackson is pitching in 12.5 points per game and hitting 44.2 percent (19 of 43) of his shots from 3-point range, which is fifth best among Lone Star Conference shooters.

Ramirez is shooting 51.7 percent from the field this season (31 of 60), and he is 9 of 24 from long range this season.

Orlando Horton is shooting 50 percent from the field (18 of 36) and scoring 11.2 points per game for the Mustangs. The junior guard from Houston leads the team with 3.2 assists per game.

Charles McClennahan, Jr., a 6-8 senior forward, is scoring 10.8 points per game and grabbing a team-leading 6.8 rebounds per game. 

The Mustangs are grabbing the fourth-most rebounds among teams in the LSC with 39.2 boards per game, including 12.2 offensive rebounds per contest, which is seventh-best in the conference.

Jackson and Horton are both getting two steals per game, and Davyon Butler is nabbing 1.7 steals per game. The Mustangs are 21st in the nation and fourth in the conference with 11 steals per game.

The Mustangs are fourth in the league with 3.7 blocks per game, and Wesley is fourth in the league with nine total blocks and third in the LSC with 1.5 blocks per game.

Midwestern State is forcing 16.8 turnovers per game, which is fifth-most in the LSC and 46th among Division II programs. The Mustangs are plus-3 in turnover margin. 

Midwestern State is the sixth-highest scoring team in the conference with 83.3 points per game, but the Stangs are allowing opponents to score 81.2 points per game, which is 13th in the LSC.

UT Permian Basin (3-4, 0-1) leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 11-10, but Midwestern State won both meetings last season, including a 75-61 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, improving to 7-2 when hosting the Falcons.

Tash Lunday scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for UTPB in its conference opener at Lubbock Christian on Wednesday night, but the Chaparrals prevailed, 78-59, shooting 58.5 percent from the field and outrebounding the Falcons, 38-23.

Lunday is the fourth-leading scorer in the LSC with 17.7 points per game, and he leads the league with more than 34 minutes played per outing.  The 6-6 senior from Flandreau, South Dakota, is the second leading rebounder in the conference with 9.4 boards per game. 

Lunday is 41 of 50 at the free-throw line this season. He has the third-most free-throw attempts in the LSC and has made the second-most foul shots in the conference. His free-throw shooting percentage (82%) is 10th-best in the LSC.

Bryceson Burns, a 6-6 senior from Houston, is dishing out 3.3 assists per game and is also leading the team with one block per game. Burns and Sharrod Taylor are both averaging 1.4 steals per game. Taylor is a 6-2 senior guard from Youngstown, Ohio.

The Falcons are forcing 13.6 turnovers per game with 8.1 steals.

UT Permian Basin is averaging 78.3 points per game while holding opponents to 77.7 points per contest.

The Falcons are seeking their first road win of the season with losses at Colorado State-Pueblo and Sul Ross State in non-conference action.

Midwestern State returns to action on Dec. 13 and visits Oklahoma Christian at Payne Athletic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
