Mustangs open conference play at home against Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State hosts Angelo State in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday night. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (2-3) won two of its first three games under the dome this season and is coming off a 67-57 loss in an exhibition game at Tarleton State on Friday. The Mustangs held a 15-point lead over the Texans with 15 minutes remaining against their Division I counterpart. 

Junior guard Orlando Horton, Jr. was 6 of 8 from the field and scored 18 points to lead the Mustangs. Junior guard Davyon Butler scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds. Junior forward DaCannon Wesley was the leading rebounder for MSU with 10 boards, and the Mustangs outrebounded Tarleton State, 37-33.

Senior swingman Jonathan Jackson is the leading scorer for Midwestern State with 13.6 points per game, and he is one of four players averaging in double figures. Jackson is the fourth-best 3-point shooter in the league, hitting from long distance 48.6 percent of the time, and he has the third-most 3 pointers in the LSC with 18. His 3.6 3-pointers made per game is 42nd in the nation and third in the 

Charles McClennahan, Jr., a 6-8 senior forward, is scoring 13 points per game and grabbing a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per game. 

The Mustangs are grabbing the third-most rebounds among teams in the LSC with 39.8 boards per game, including 13 offensive rebounds per contest, which is sixth-best in the conference.

Terrance Ramirez, a junior guard, and Horton are both scoring 11.8 points per game. Horton is averaging three assists per contest, and Ramirez is dishing out 2.8 helpers per game.

Antwan Taylor is averaging three assists per game and is fourth in the conference with an assist/turnover ration of plus-4, which is 26th best among NCAA Division II players.  

Jackson and Horton are both getting two steals per game, and Charles Fofanah is nabbing 1.8 steals per game. The Mustangs are 19th in the nation and fourth in the conference with 11.2 steals per game.

The Mustangs are fourth in the league with 3.8 blocks per game, and Wesley is third in the league with nine total blocks and 1.8 blocks per game.

Midwestern State is forcing 17.5 turnovers per game, which is fifth-most in the LSC and 39th among Division II programs. The Mustangs are plus-3.6 in turnover margin. 

Midwestern State is the fifth-highest scoring team in the conference with 84.6 points per game, but the Stangs are allowing opponents to score 83.4 points per game, which is 14th in the LSC.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Angelo State, 51-38, and won the last meeting, 74-57, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. MSU is 35-9 when hosting the Rams.

Angelo State (8-1) has a three-game winning streak following a 73-51 victory over Justice College at the West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic, where the Rams also edged Fort Lewis, 78-77. 

Angelo State has four players averaging double-figures in scoring, led by Jaqai Murray, a 6-7 senior forward from Brooklyn, New York, who is scoring 14.3 points per game. Jesaiah McWright, a 6-4 senior guard from Houston, is adding 12.1 points per game. Quadir Pettaway, a 6-2 junior from Newport News, Virginia, had a season-high 21 points against Justice on 8-of-11 shooting and is scoring 10.9 points per game for the Rams. Ja'Queze Kirby, a 6-7 senior forward from Hazelhurst, Georgia, is pitching in 10 points per game.

Jordan Crawford is dishing out 3.4 assists per game, and Kailon Nicholls is adding three assists per contest for Angelo State, which is outscoring its opponents, 73.0 -63.4, and shooting 43.8 percent from the field.

The Rams have the 19th-best scoring defense in NCAA Division II, and they are second in the conference behind St. Mary's, which leads the nation, holding opponents to 56.4 points per game.

Opponents are only shooting 39.7 percent from the field against the Rams, who force 17 turnovers a game.

Kirby is the leading rebounder with 7.1 rebounds per game and Murray is pulling down 6.3 boards per contest.
The Rams are grabbing nearly 37 rebounds a game, which is seventh-most in the LSC. 

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a conference showdown with UT Permian Basin on Friday afternoon. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
