Mustangs to play for national championship after 3-0 win over Southern New Hampshire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Midwestern State (18-3-3) secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University (17-3-2) at Weidner Field on Friday. The Mustangs were making their third appearance in the NCAA Final Four, and  the win propelled them to their first-ever NCAA Division II national championship game.

Goalkeeper Jake Morris recorded five saves for his 10th clean sheet of the season and his third during the NCAA Tournament.

The first half began with the Mustangs taking an early lead, as Alan Rivera scored his sixth goal of the year and his third game-winning goal in the 4th minute with an assist from Liam Pritchard. MSU continued to apply pressure, and Gabriel Gacovicaj doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, with assists from Cooper Tea and Liam Kervick. It was Gacovicaj's third goal in three games, all scored during the NCAA Tournament.

Morris made crucial saves for the Maroon & Gold, notably stopping a shot from Martin Zapata in the 37th minute, keeping Southern New Hampshire scoreless. As the half closed, MSU held a 2-0 lead.

The second half commenced with the Mustangs quickly extending their lead. Dereck Espinal found the back of the net just 24 seconds into the half, assisted by Rivera and Pritchard, pushing the score to 3-0. Espinal's goal was his fifth of the season and his third in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Pritchard's assist was one of four he's contributed during the NCAA Tournament. Morris made a crucial save in the 49th minute, denying Philipp Herrmann's attempt.

MSU maintained their defensive resilience as Southern New Hampshire pressed forward, with Morris adding another save in the 83rd minute. Despite Southern New Hampshire's aggressive efforts, including multiple shots and several fouls, the Maroon & Gold held their ground.
