EDMOND, Okla. – Midwestern State is seeking its fourth consecutive victory as it visits Oklahoma Christian in a Lone Star Conference matchup at Payne Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Midwestern State (4-3, 2-0) defeated Angelo State and UT Permian Basin to open conference play last week. The Mustangs overcame an eight-point deficit at halftime to defeat the Rams, 77-70, as
Terrance Ramirez scored 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range.
Tehshaundre Cole finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Two nights later, Ramirez hit 9-of-14 shots en route to a 26-point performance, nailing 4-of-7 shots from 3-point range, as the Mustangs cruised to a 96-84 win over UT Permian Basin.
Charles McClennahan, Jr. scored 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds for the Mustangs, who won the battle of the boards, 38-26.
Midwestern State shot 49.6 percent in its first two conference games, including 23-of-46 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs are the second-highest scoring team in the conference with 85.1 points per game, but MSU is allowing opponents to score 81.9 points per contest. Midwestern State is scoring nearly 18.5 fast-break points per game, which is third in the LSC and 21st among NCAA Division II programs.
Ramirez is the eighth-leading scorer in the LSC with 15.7 points per game, and he is leading the Mustangs with 3.4 assists per game. The junior guard from Grapevine, Texas, is fifth in the conference with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Jonathan Jackson is leading the conference and is 16th in the nation with 3.3 3-pointers per game, and he boasts the second-highest 3-point percentage in the league at 47.9 (23 of 48). The senior from Dallas, Texas, is averaging 12.7 points per game.
Midwestern State is breaking even in the rebounding war this season. The Mustangs are pulling down 39 rebounds per game, which is second most among LSC schools, and the opponents are also grabbing 39 caroms per contest.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Oklahoma Christian, 28-16, and defeated the Eagles last season at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 90-58, but the Mustangs are 9-11 when visiting Oklahoma Christian and have lost their last two visits to Payne Athletic Center.
Oklahoma Christian (4-4, 0-3) has a four-game losing streak and is coming off a 70-67 loss to Lubbock Christian despite holding the Chaparrals to 7-of-20 shooting from 3-point range. Jason Clark led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting for OC. Miles Gibson recorded his second double-double of the season for the Eagles with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Gibson is the leading scorer for OC with 15.8 points per game, while Clark is contributing 15 points per contest. Gibson is also the leading rebounder for the Eagles with 6.8 rebounds per game, and Clark is pulling down 6.5 boards per game.
Gibson, whose brother Mason played at Midwestern State for three seasons, is third in the conference with a field-goal percentage of 56.1.
The Eagles commit the second-fewest fouls in the LSC with 15.1 per contest and have the fifth-fewest turnovers per game with 11.9.
Midwestern State will play in the 2025 River City Classic at St. Mary's in San Antonio. The Mustangs meet former LSC foe Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and tangle with Pittsburg State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
