WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State welcomes West Texas A&M to Memorial Stadium for its home finale and Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Midwestern State (2-7, 2-5) has a three-game losing streak following a 31-3 loss at Western Oregon as the Wolves rolled up 476 yards of total offense against the Mustangs, who are 1-3 at home this season.
The Mustangs are eighth in the conference and 151st among NCAA Division II programs in total defense, allowing 467.7 yards per game. MSU is allowing 38.4 points per game, which is eighth in the league and 145th in the nation.
Sophomore linebacker
Noah Bustard leads the team with 54 tackles, and he has recorded 2.5 tackles for loss this season. The Mustangs have recorded 18.5 sacks, led by
Oliver Jack with 3.5 and
Kam'rin Devault with three sacks. Bustard and
Charles McKnight each have 2.5 sacks.
Midwestern State has recovered five fumbles and intercepted eight passes this season. The Mustangs are plus-1 in turnover ratio this season.
The Mustangs are scoring 24.2 points per game as the offense is passing for 263 yards per game and rushing for 117 yards.
Five Midwestern State quarterbacks have combined to complete 60 percent of their passes for 2,369 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Jakolby Longino has thrown for 1,346 yards and six touchdowns in six appearances, while
Sean Jastrab has thrown for 762 yards and 10 touchdowns in four appearances.
Junior wide receiver Demonte Green is second in the conference with 107.7 all-purpose yards this season. He is also second in the conference with 82.2 yards receiving per game, and he has caught the fifth-most touchdown passes in the LSC this season with six.
Greene has returned kicks for 229 yards, but is second on the team behind
Cedonyae Lott, who is second in the conference with 412 yards on kick returns.
Kohen Maroney is converting 80 percent of his field goal attempts for the Mustangs, making 8 of 10 field goals overall. He missed a 52-yard effort at Angelo State and a 45-yarder off the muddy, natural-grass surface at Western Oregon, but the freshman from Wichita Falls is 6 of 6 at Memorial Stadium, including a season-long 50-yard field goal against Central Washington.
Midwestern State lost its last five meetings with West Texas A&M, including a 17-12 loss in Canyon last season. Four of the last five encounters have been at Buffalo Stadium. WT leads the all-time series, 22-15, and is 10-7 when visiting Wichita Falls. The Buffaloes won their last trip to Memorial Stadium in 2022, 38-26, but are 1-3 on the road this season and have lost their last two away games.
West Texas A&M (5-4, 5-2) won four of its last five games overall and is coming off a 53-48 win over Texas A&M – Kingsville.
RJ Martinez completed 30 of 39 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns, adding 48 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Sean Johnson finished with 11 receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown. Jamel Acosta-Lewis intercepted two passes, while Ashton Reynolds registered five tackles, one sack, and returned a fumble recovery 25 yards for a touchdown.
West Texas A&M is getting off to fast starts, and Midwestern State has been outscored in the first quarter this season, 93-61.
The Buffaloes have scored points on their first possession of the game in seven of the first nine games this season, averaging 5.6 plays and 51.3 yards per opening possession. West Texas A&M has received the opening kickoff in eight of its first nine contests.
West Texas A&M leads the conference in total offense with 455 yards per game, which is ninth among NCAA Division II programs, and the Buffaloes have the second-best passing offense in the nation with 335.7 yards per game. WT is the second-highest scoring team in the LSC with 35.1 points per game.
Martinez is third in the league and sixth among DII quarterbacks with 24 completions per game. Martinez averages 8.5 yards per pass attempt, which is tops in the conference and 25th in Division II. He leads the league and is second in the nation with 317 passing yards and 342 total yards per game.
Trevin Edwards, Drew Zamar, Zach Phipps and Jamir Roberts are all among the top 12 pass catchers in the LSC in receiving yards. Edwards, Zamar and Johnson are among the top-11 receivers in the conference in receptions per game. Edwards is averaging more than four receptions per game, while Zamar and Johnson make 3.4 catches per game.
Phipps leads the team with five touchdown receptions this season, while Trevin Edwards has caught four touchdown passes. Johnson, Zamar and C'ing Blanton all have three touchdown receptions.
The WT defense is yielding 372 yards and 28.3 points per game and is fifth in the LSC in both categories.
Miles Hill leads the conference with 8.2 tackles per game. Acosta-Lewis leads the team and is fourth in the league with nine passes defended this season, including two interceptions for the Buffaloes.
Midwestern State closes out the regular season on the road at Western New Mexico next week. Kickoff at Ben Altamirano Field in Silver City is scheduled for 1 p.m.
