Mustangs host Angelo State and UTPB in final home matches of season

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State hosts its final two home matches of the regular season as Angelo State visits on Friday at 6 p.m., and UT Permian Basin squares off with the Mustangs on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (15-8. 8-6) is 9-1 at home this season and is coming off its first home loss of the season as Texas Woman's squeaked by the Mustangs in five sets. The Mustangs are in a crowded field of teams vying for a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.

Friday night is a "Milestone Match" as MSU will recognize the milestone accomplishments of several players, and it is also the Alumni Appreciation Game. 

Members of the 1985 team will be in attendance as the program celebrates the rebirth of volleyball at Midwestern State 40 years ago.  The university first started playing volleyball in 1969, but the program was discontinued in favor of softball following the 1980 season.

Demi Stauffenberg, Sadie Christiansen and Alayna Guerrero will be recognized for career milestones reached during the course of the season.

Stauffenberg and Christiansen both reached 1,000 career digs after starting their collegiate careers at Laramie County CC. Stauffenberg also has more than 1,000 career kills. Guerrero has surpassed 2,000 career assists. Guerrero has 945 assists this season with three matches remaining on the regular season schedule.

Guerrero, a junior from Red Oak, Texas, is second in the conference with 10.4 assists per set. Senior Trinity Vinzant from Decatur, Texas, has been a frequent beneficiary and is seventh in the conference with 3.3 kills per set. Bella Dickens is responsible for 2.8 kills per set for the Mustangs.

Dickens leads the team and is ninth in the LSC with a .287 hitting percentage, and Jaiden Wright boasts a .270 hitting percentage. Midwestern State is sixth in the LSC with an attack percentage of .220 and is averaging more than 13 kills per set.

The Mustangs lead the conference and are sixth in the nation with more than 19 digs per set this season. Stauffenberg leads the team with nearly 3.4 digs per set. 

The Mustangs had season-high 15 blocks in their 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist last week and followed that with a 10-block performance in their 3-2 loss to TWU on Saturday. 

Wright, who has 18 blocks in her last two matches, leads the team and is 11th in the conference with 70 blocks this season. Dickens is 20th in the LSC and second on the team with 57 total blocks.
 
Vinzant and Jenna Redding lead the Mustangs in service aces. Vinzant is second in the conference with 38 aces this season, and Redding has the 12th-most aces in the LSC with 29.

ANGELO STATE (17-7, 11-2)

Angelo State arrives in Wichita Falls with a four-match winning streak, including a 3-1 victory over No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon for its second win over a ranked opponent this season. 

Madi Parrish and Demi Carter combined for 41 of 66 kills in the win over the Lady Buffs. Parrish led the Rambelles with 21 kills, and she also finished with 11 digs, four aces, and four blocks.

Carter hit .349 for the match and set career-highs with 20 kills and eight digs.

Angelo State boasts the second-highest hitting percentage in the LSC at .241 and is holding its opponents to a .151 hitting percentage, which is third-best in the conference.

The Rambelles average 12.6 assists per set, led by Madison Scrivner and Gabi Ashcroft. Scrivner is ninth in the league with 5.8 assists per set, and Ashcraft is close to five assists per set.

Parish is fourth in the league with 3.95 points per set and sixth in the LSC with 3.4 kills per set.

Angelo State is ninth in the LSC with 1.8 blocks per set, and 11th in the conference with 15.9 digs per set.

Angelo State leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 42-11, and has won the last 28 matches against MSU. The Rambelles swept Midwestern State 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. Angelo State hit .336, and Parrish finished with 15 kills on 42 swings for the Rambelles.

UT PERMIAN BASIN (9-14, 7-6) 

The Falcons visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Senior Day as the Mustangs recognize the contributions of Stauffenberg, Vinzant, Christiansen, Koryn Johnson and Arrianna Fields.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with UTPB, 12-11, but the Mustangs have lost the last seven meetings, including a 3-0 loss in Odessa last season.

UT Permian Basin visits Lubbock Christian of Friday night before traveling to Wichita Falls, where the Falcons have won four of their seven meetings with the Mustangs.

UTPB has alternated wins and losses in its last eight matches and is coming off a 3-2 victory over Eastern New Mexico at UTPB Gym Complex. 

The Falcons are 4-6 on the road this season and won its last away match at Sul Ross State, 3-1.

UTPB is fifth in the conference with 17.1 digs per set and fifth in service aces with 135.

Kierra Freeman leads the team with 7.7 assists per set, and she leads the team with 30 aces this season.

Kyndall Torres leads the Falcons with 3.1 digs per set and 22 digs in a 3-2 win over Eastern New Mexico.

Ashlee Macias is the team leader with 245 points and 4.37 kills per set. The sophomore from El Paso had 35 kills, 16 digs and hit .456 against Eastern New Mexico. Macias leads the team with a .272 attack percentage.
