DALLAS — Midwestern State (11-2-6, 10-0-4) fell 1-0 to Texas Woman's University (15-2-3, 9-2-3) in the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship semifinals at Patriot Soccer Field on Thursday. The Mustangs snapped a 16-game unbeaten streak. Despite outshooting their opponent 16-8, MSU was unable to find the back of the net, marking the first time this season it has been shut out. This is also the first time Midwestern State has been held scoreless since the semifinals of the LSC Women's Soccer Championship last year.
Midwestern State made its fourth straight appearance in the LSC Women's Soccer Championship semifinals.
The match began with both teams testing each other's defenses. MSU's
Allessandra Romano had an early attempt in the 4th minute, but it was saved by Texas Woman's goalkeeper Faith Graves. MSU continued to apply pressure, with
Lillia Besedin making multiple attempts, including a shot in the 20th minute that was blocked. Texas Woman's responded with a shot from Bri Luna in the 13th minute, which was saved by
Lauren Short. Both teams had several corner kicks and fouls as they pushed for an advantage, but the first half ended scoreless.
The second half saw Texas Woman's take an early lead with a goal by Bri Luna in the 46th minute, assisted by Alyssa Striker. MSU responded with multiple attempts to equalize, including a shot by
Nyxalee Munoz in the 64th minute that hit the top woodwork. Despite consistent pressure from the Maroon & Gold, including a saved shot by Munoz in the 82nd minute.. Texas Woman's held on to their 1-0 lead, with Faith Graves making several key saves to secure the victory.
Midwestern State waits to see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship. The selections will be announced Monday at 5:30 p.m.
