MONMOUTH, Oregon – Midwestern State makes its annual trek to the Pacific Northwest to face Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at McArthur Field is scheduled for 3:05 CDT.
Midwestern State (2-6, 2-4) has lost back-to-back games following a 56-13 defeat at the hands of No. 7-ranked Central Washington. The Wildcats exploded for 35 second quarter points and pulled away from the Mustangs in a game that was interrupted twice by lightning delays.
Central Washington rushed for 390 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. The Mustangs are allowing 244 yards rushing per game, which is eighth-most in the Lone Star Conference and 151st out of 157 programs in NCAA Division II. Opponents are scoring more than 39 points a game against the Mustangs.
Western Oregon (6-2, 5-1) uses a balanced attack, but rushes for more than 170 yards per game, which is fourth-most in the LSC and 48th in the nation.
Junior running back Jermaine Land is the leading rusher for the Wolves with 445 yards and picks up nearly six yards a carry.
Junior quarterback Jordan McCarty is the second leading rusher for Western Oregon with 395 yards and is picking up more than 4.5 yards per carry.
McCarty is the sixth-leading passer in the league, completing 97-of-175 passes for 1,113 yards and 10 touchdowns with five interceptions.
Western Oregon is scoring more than 29 points per game.
The Wolves have a four-game winning streak following a 34-27 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville last Saturday. Their only conference loss came at West Texas A&M, when the Buffaloes held Western Oregon to 10 yards rushing and 45 yards passing.
The Western Oregon defense is ranked sixth in the conference, allowing 380 yards and 24.3 points per game. Senior linebacker Aden Murphy is the third leading tackler in the conference with eight stops per game. Senior defensive lineman Joseph Northcutt has six sacks this season, which is third most in the LSC.
The Midwestern State offense is amassing 282 yards per contest with its passing game and rushing for 120 yards per game.
Senior quarterback
Jakolby Longino is the fourth-leading passer in the league with 263.6 yards passing, and he is completing more than 62 percent of his passes (102 of 163). Longino has thrown six touchdown passes and three interceptions.
Longino had his best game as a ball carrier against Central Washington, rushing for 45 yards on 11 carries, including a season-long 15-yard gain.
Sophomore wide receive
Demonte Greene is the third-leading receiver in the conference with 87 yards receiving per game. Greene has 51 receptions for 696 yards and six touchdowns. He is also averaging 18 yards per kick return.
Freshman running back
Reginald Williams is the fifth-leading rusher in the LSC with 70.2 yards per game. Williams has rushed 60 times in five appearances and picked up 351 yards, 5.9 yards per carry.
The Mustangs have forced 12 turnovers, including seven interceptions, and seven different defenders have picked off a pass this season.
Freshman kicker
Kohen Maroney has made 7-of-8 field goal attempts for the Mustangs this season and has not missed from 50 yards or less.
Midwestern State is 2-2 in its all-time series with Western Oregon, which defeated the Mustangs in Wichita Falls last season, 21-16. MSU won its last visit to Monmouth, 33-6, in 2023.
The Mustangs return to Memorial Stadium on Nov. 8th for a Military Appreciation Day showdown with West Texas A&M in the home finale. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m., and MSU seniors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
