WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (7-1-5, 7-0-3) secured a decisive 3-0 victory against Angelo State (6-3-3, 5-2-2) at Stang Park on Saturday, with the Mustangs recording a shutout.
The match began with Midwestern State establishing an early lead against Angelo State in the 8th minute, when
Allessandra Romano scored with assists from
Madison Brinkley and
Marlene Myrvold. A long throw in from the left wing was flicked on by Myrvold and Brinkley, with Romano catching the ball on the half volley to give MSU the lead. The Mustangs extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by
Lillia Besedin in the 29th minute, assisted by
Mable Pruter. Pruter swung in a deep free kick from the right sideline, with Besedin planting the firm header into the back of the net. A physical half was marked by frequent fouls, with both teams committing multiple infractions, including a yellow card for ASU's Ashlyn Vick in the 24th minute.
The second half saw multiple fouls, with Abby James of ASU committing three fouls in the early minutes. MSU was active offensively, with shots from
Leeci Snyder and
Jimena Rodriguez, though they initially missed the target. The Mustangs battled to find a clinching goal, sealing the victory with a Myrvold header three seconds from the final whistle. Both Snyder and Rodriguez combined on the right wing, with Snyder's cross being put away by Myrvold with a glancing header.
Myrvold contributed a goal and assist, leading the team with three points. Romano's opening goal proved to be the game winner, converting her lone shot into a decisive score. Besedin added a goal, finishing with two points from her single shot on target.
Lauren Short recorded a shutout in goal, making one save to secure the victory.
Melyna Martinez played a significant role in goal, facing seven shots and allowing two goals over 84 minutes of play. Emilee Jones was the only Rambelles player to register a shot on goal during the match. Claire Stoermer saw action as well, facing two shots and conceding one goal in her brief 5-minute stint.
Looking ahead, Maroon & Gold will host UT Tyler on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Stang Park. The game will begin at 11 a.m. ET.
