RICHARDSON, Texas – Midwestern State opens a five-game road trip on Friday as it visits UT Dallas and will venture east for a match with UT Tyler on Saturday. The Mustangs (12-4, 5-2) have a three-match winning streak and are tied for fifth place in the Lone Star Conference. First serve at UTD Activity Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Trinity Vinzant had 12 kills and four aces as MSU swept Southwestern Oklahoma State in its final non-conference match of the regular season.
The Mustangs, who lead the conference and are sixth among NCAA Division II programs in digs, finished with 63 digs in the three-set match on Tuesday.
Demi Stauffenberg led the team with 13, while
Alayna Guerrero added 12 and Vinzant finished with 11.
Stauffenberg, Guerrero and
Sadie Christiansen are all averaging more than three digs per set for the Mustangs.
Guerrero had 31 of the 35 assists for Midwestern State in the match. The junior from Red Oak, Texas, leads the conference and is 10th in the nation with 10.87 assists per set.
As a team, MSU is averaging 12.87 assists per set, which is second in the LSC and 16th in the nation.
Midwestern State was facing one of the most prolific blocking teams in the country on Tuesday, and SWOSU had five of its 10 blocks in the first set. Midwestern State completed the match with four blocks of its own, led by
Isabella Dickens, who had three block assists in the victory.
Dickens also had eight kills for the Mustangs, who are second in the conference with 13.63 kills per set, which is 33rd-best among Division II programs. Midwestern State is averaging 38.47 attacks per set, which is second most in the LSC and 22nd in the nation.
Vinzant leads the team with 10.35 attacks per set, which is third most in the conference.
Midwestern State boasts the fourth-best hitting percentage in the conference at .231 with
Jaiden Wright and Dickens both among the top-10 attacking percentages in the LSC. Wright is hitting .318 (seventh in the LSC) and Dickens is hitting .291 (10th in the LSC).
Opponents are only hitting .164 against the Mustangs this season.
Midwestern State delivers 1.82 service aces per set, which is fifth-best in the LSC, and Vinzant is fourth in the league with 0.47 aces per set.
UT DALLAS (3-13, 1-5)
UT Dallas is in its first season as a member of the LSC, and after defeating Cameron 3-2 for its first win in the conference, the Comets have lost their next four matches. UT Dallas has been swept in each of its last three matches, which have all been on the road at UT Tyler, Angelo State and UT Permian Basin.
UT Dallas is 1-1 at home this season with its only victory coming against the Aggies. Oklahoma Christian defeated the Comets in their conference opener, 3-0.
Sophomore Mella Mendoza-Flores leads UTD with .354 hitting percentage, and junior Laura See is hitting .339. As at team, the Comets are hitting .150 and their opponents are hitting .228.
Midwestern State won its only previous meeting with UT Dallas, 3-0, at the Wayland Baptist Coca-Cola Classic in 2005.
UT TYLER (9-7, 5-1)
UT Tyler hosts Lubbock Christian on Friday before welcoming the Mustangs to Louise Herrington Patriot Center for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday.
Autumn Perry leads the Patriots with 3.23 kills per set, and Audrey Brandon has a .374 attack. Saige Rivera, the LSC Preseason Setter of the Year, averages 8.11 assists per set, and Anna Arceneaux leads UT Tyler with 4.18 digs per set.
Emma Vazquez has 22 service aces and Kaitlyn Davis has 17 for the Patriots.
