No. 9-ranked Mustangs seeks fourth straight win at Dallas Baptist

DALLAS – Midwestern State is atop the Lone Star Conference table and has taken all nine points in its last three matches, and the Mustangs are on the road Wednesday night to face Dallas Baptist, which is five points behind MSU in the standings. Kickoff at Patriot Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Midwestern State (7-2-3, 3-1-0) has not allowed in its last two matches and is coming off a 2-0 win at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday.

Alan Rivera scored his fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute, and Dereck Espinal scored his second goal 20 minutes later. Liam Kervick and Jarrod McKechnie each had an assist for the Mustangs, who outshot the Eagles, 13-7. MSU had eight shots on goal and limited OC to four shots on goal.

Parker Plaxco leads the team and is second in the conference with eight goals this season, and he is also second in the league with 19 points from 12 matches. Plaxco has the 12th-most points among NCAA Division II players. Rivera is second on the team with four goals and eight points, which is seventh-most in the LSC. Jaime Villagomez has seven points and is eighth in the LSC with two goals and three assists for the Stangs.

Daniel Robles and Jake Morris continue to split time as the Mustang goalkeeper this season. Both goalkeepers have made six starts this season.  

Morris made four saves in the victory at OC for his third clean sheet of the campaign, and improved his record to 3-1-2. Morris has 0.98 goals-against average.

Robles is 4-1-1 with two shutouts and has a 1.02 goals-against average. 

Midwestern State improved its away record to 2-0-2 with the win at Oklahoma Christian, and the Mustangs are 7-0-1 all-time at Patriot Soccer Field. The Mustangs won their last visit, 3-0, and Liam Pritchard scored the final goal of the match for MSU in the 68th minute.

Last season, Dallas Baptist played a 0-0 draw with Midwestern State at Stang Park. Midwestern State outshot the Patriots, 18-9, but DBU had four shots on goal while the Mustangs put just three shots on frame.


Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Patriots 23-0-4 and is 8-0-1 since becoming conference foes.

Dallas Baptist (4-4-2, 1-1-1) is 3-0-1 at home this season following a 1-1 draw with UT Dallas in their last match. The Comets struck early with a goal in the third minute, and the Patriots answered as Gavyn Rosales scored in the 21st minute. DBU had only one shot on goal in the draw.

Rosales became the fifth player to score a goal for the Patriots. Caleb Centeno has four goals and two assists for DBU, while Chase Turcotte and Erick Oliveira have each scored twice. The Patriots have been outscored 13-10 and have not scored more than two goals in a match this season.

Goalkeeper Patrick Banich has started six matches for DBU and 3-1-2 with a 1.13 goals-against average. Jackson Bankers and Garrett McGee have each made two starts. Bankers is 0-2-0 with a 2.33 goals-against average, and McGee is 1-1-0 with 1.00 goals-against average. Banich has both shutouts for the Patriots this season.

Jess Jobe is in his fifth season as the head coach at DBU and is 28-31-21.

Michael Meachum is 110-24-15 in his eight seasons as the head coach at Midwestern State.

Midwestern State returns to Stang Park for a Saturday night match against UT Dallas. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
