WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State hosts its final non-conference match of the regular season on Tuesday night as Southwestern Oklahoma State visits the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a 6 p.m. match.
The Mustangs are 7-0 at home after scoring victories over Oklahoma Christian and Cameron this past weekend.
Midwestern State (11-4, 5-2) fended off a comeback by the Eagles to win in five sets on Friday night, and Cameron was swept by the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
Alayna Guererro had 60 assists in the 3-2 win over Oklahoma Christian, while
Arrianna Fields and
Isabella Dickens each had 17 in the victory.
Jenna Redding finished with a team-leading 29 digs for the Mustangs, who had 118 digs as a team.
Midwestern State hit .439 as it breezed past Cameron, 3-0, committing only five attack errors on 107 swings. Dickens and
Trinity Vinzant led the team with 15 and 12 kills respectively.
Guerrero leads the LSC and is 10th among NCAA Division II setters with 10.89 assists per set, and MSU is second in the league with 12.93 assists per set.
The Mustangs are second in the conference and 26th in the nation with 13.67 kills per set, led by Vinzant, Dickens and Fields.
Vinzant is 10th in the LSC with 3.21 kills per set. Dickens is 15th among conference hitters with 2.86 kills per set, and Fields is 22nd in the league with 2.73 kills per set.
Midwestern State boast the fourth-best hitting percentage in the LSC at .233.
Jaiden Wright is fifth in the conference with a .324 attack percentage, while Dickens is hitting .290 — 10th in the league.
Opponents are only hitting .169 against the Stang Gang.
The Mustangs lead the conference and are seventh in the nation with 19.28 digs per set, and
Demi Stauffenberg is 13th in the LSC with 3.44 digs per set.
Sadie Christiansen is 15th in the conference with 3.22, and Guerrero is 18th in the league with 3.11 digs per set.
Vinzant and Redding have combined to hit 45 of the team's 101 service aces. Vinzant has the seventh-most aces in the LSC with 24, and Redding is 12th in the conference with 21 aces this season. Midwestern State has the sixth-most aces in the LSC.
Midwestern State has won seven of its last eight meetings with Southwestern Oklahoma State, including a 3-1 victory at Pioneer Event Center in Weatherford, Oklahoma, last season. MSU holds a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series and has won seven of the nine encounters at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Bulldogs scored a 25-21, 25-17, 15-25, 25-20 victory in the 2023 season opener at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Wright, Dickens and Guerrero all made their MSU debuts in that match. Wright and Dickens each had seven kills and hit .250, while Guerrero finished with 30 assists and had 14 digs.
Southwestern Oklahoma State (7-11, 5-2) is coming off a five-set victory over Henderson State as both teams produced 223 attacks, and the Bulldogs had five players record double-digit kills. Lacy Mott had 24 kills and 25 digs in the victory. Paris Patterson had a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Hailey Smith finished with 13 kills while Morgan Ritchie and Sydney Winfrey each had 10 kills for SWOSU.
The Bulldogs are second among NCAA Division II programs with 2.82 blocks per set, and they lead the nation with 192 total blocks.
Katja Blanchat leads the Great American Conference and is seventh in the nation with 1.41 blocks per set, and she is eighth in the country with 90 total blocks. Sydnee Winfrey (1.14) and Hailey Smith (1.03) are among the top six blocks-per-set leaders in the GAC. Winfrey is third in the league and Smith is sixth.
Southwestern Oklahoma State is sixth in the GAC with a hitting percentage of .194, and the Bulldogs are eighth in the conference with 12.12 kills per set.
Blanchat is the leading hitter with an attack percentage of .265, and Paris Patterson produces 2.76 kills per set for a team-leading total of 185. Smith has 179 total kills for the Bulldogs, whose opponents are hitting .167 this season.
The Bulldogs are recording 16.54 digs per set, which is seventh-most in the GAC, and Jada Permenter is fourth in the league with 4.94 digs per set.
Permenter had 21 digs in the loss to MSU last season as the Mustangs pulled out a 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 29-27 victory at SWOSU. Stauffenberg had 17 kills and 21 digs in the victory, and Guerrero finished with 31 assists for the Mustangs, who hit .202 while holding the Bulldogs to an attack percentage of .180.
Midwestern State returns to Lone Star Conference play and begins a five-match road swing at UT Dallas on Friday night. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at UTD Activity Center.
