Volleyball Completes Sweep Over Cameron, 3-0

The Mustangs posted a season high .439 hitting percentage.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (11-4, 5-2 Lone Star) dominated Cameron (4-14, 0-6 Lone Star) in a straight-sets victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, winning 25-12, 25-17, 25-12.

The Mustangs posted an impressive .439 hitting percentage with a total of 52 kills, while the Aggies managed a .162 hitting percentage with 29 kills.

Midwestern State opened the match with a strong start, capitalizing on an early service ace by Jenna Redding and a series of kills from Isabella Dickens to quickly establish a 3-0 lead. The team's offense was effectively facilitated by Alayna Guerrero, who contributed several assists, helping the squad to a 7-1 advantage. Despite CU's brief rally to narrow the margin, MSU maintained control with key plays from Trinity Vinzant and Jaiden Wright, extending the lead to 14-8.

As the first set progressed, the Maroon & Gold continued to build momentum. Defensive efforts, including a block by Wright and Demi Stauffenberg, thwarted Cameron's attempts to close the gap. Another service ace by Redding and multiple attack errors by Cameron allowed MSU to widen the lead further. The set concluded with MSU securing a decisive 25-12 victory, setting a strong tone for the match.

The Mustangs established significant momentum early in set two with a series of successful plays. A decisive stretch saw Stauffenberg and Dickens each contribute multiple kills, with Guerrero consistently setting up opportunities. This early run helped propel the Mustangs to a 6-1 advantage, showcasing effective teamwork and execution.

As set two progressed, MSU extended their lead, driven by strong performances from Vinzant and Wright. Guerrero continued to facilitate the offense, adding to the score with service aces and assists, helping maintain a comfortable margin. Despite a brief rally by the Aggies, the Mustangs closed the set effectively, securing a 25-17 victory to strengthen their position in the match.

MSU opened set three with a series of impactful plays, highlighted by Vinzant's early kill from Guerrero that leveled the score at 1-1. Wright and Arrianna Fields continued to pressure Cameron with decisive kills, contributing to a 5-3 lead. This momentum was bolstered by Redding's service ace, extending MSU's advantage to 7-3.

The team maintained its momentum with a 5-0 run, featuring multiple kills from Vinzant and a crucial block alongside Wright, widening the gap to 15-5. Despite some resistance from the Aggies, highlighted by a kill from Jennifer Valdez, the Mustangs responded with strong contributions from Dickens and Fields, pushing the lead to 19-9.

Closing set three, Vinzant delivered two more critical kills, and Dickens added a final point, securing a 25-12 win for the Mustangs. The set concluded with the Mustangs extending their lead in the match.

Dickens led the offensive charge for MSU with 15 kills. Guerrero facilitated the attack by posting 38 assists and contributing two service aces. Vinzant was effective at the net with 12 kills and achieved a hitting percentage of .414. Stauffenberg bolstered the defense by collecting 17 digs across the match.

Looking ahead, the Mustangs are set to face Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, October 14, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The match will commence at 6 p.m. as the Mustangs play on their home court.
