ALPINE, Texas – Fresh off its first win of the season, Midwestern State is visiting Sul Ross State for the first time since 1996. The Lobos joined the LSC last season, and both of their conference victories have come at Jackson Field, where kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
Midwestern State (1-4, 1-2) forced four turnovers and went 4-for-4 in the red zone to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. The Mustangs scored 18 fourth quarter points in their come from behind victory, which featured a 69-yard punt return from
Cedonyae Lott with 2:18 remaining in the game.
Darrell Tripline broke up a pass, and
Jaylin Broadus broke up two passes in the endzone to keep the Javelinas from tying the game in the closing seconds.
Lott was named the Lone Star Conference and the D2 Football.Com Special Teams Player of the Week following his dramatic punt return.
Christian Olige and
James Cooper, Jr. threw two of the pivotal blocks that spung the speedy Lott for the
highlight reel return.
The Mustangs successfully employed a two-quarterback system in the victory over the Javelinas.
Sean Jastrab completed 16-of-28 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, and
Josh Thomas was 4-of-9 passing for 27 yards.
Freshman running back
Reginald Williams continued to impress with 91 yards on 19 carries, and
Ryan Swirczynski rushed for 24 yards on four carries in the victory.
Conner Dunphy,
Malakai Matthews and
Demonte Greene all caught five passes in the win over TAMUK. Matthews caught a 15-yard touchdown pass to cap a 12-play, 76-yard drive in the fourth quarter, and he caught the pass on the subsequent two-point conversion.
Williams has 161 yards on 30 carries in the last two games, and he is the leading rusher for MSU among active players.
Greene is the leading receiver with 36 receptions for 519 yards and three touchdowns.
Jakolby Longino started the first four games at quarterback and completed 91-of-139 passes for 1,082 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, but he is unavailable due to injury.
Linebacker
Noah Bustard is the leading tackler for the Stang Gang defense. He also has two of the seven sacks for MSU this season. Six different players have intercepted passes, and Broadus has five breakups this season.
Brycen Lewis,
CJ Anderson, James Cooper and
Ethan Dishman have each broken up two passes for the Mustangs.
Kohen Maroney has taken over the placekicking duties and is 4-for-4 with a long field goal of 47 yards. Maroney has 22 kickoffs this season and has nine touchbacks.
Carter Revelle punted seven times last week for the injured
Joseph Carlson, and he averaged 40.57 yards per punt for the Mustangs.
Sul Ross State (0-5, 0-3) is coming off a 56-7 loss at West Texas A&M, and the Lobos are allowing opponents to score more than 60 points per game this season. The Lobos have only put 13 points on the scoreboard through five games.
Andrew Martinez has completed 30-of-66 passes for 299 yards with three interceptions, and he has not thrown a touchdown in five games.
David Smith leads the team with seven receptions, and Taribbean Ramirez has caught six passe for a team-leading 77 yards in four games for the Lobos.
Brendan Martin is the leading tackler with 45 stops, including 29 solo tackles. Jacori Tarver has the only interception for the Lobos, who have been allowing 583.2 yards per game this season.
Jacob Franco has punted 33 times, averaging 39.64 yards per punt and has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line five times. He has four punts of more than 50 yards.
The Lobos have only returned two punts this season. Kyree Payton has the longest kickoff return of 43 yards.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Sul Ross State, 7-6, and is 4-3 when visiting the Lobos.
The Mustangs are on the road again next week as they visit Angelo State at LeGrand Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff in the Concho Valley.
