WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is 4-0 this season following a loss and hosts West Texas A&M two days after a narrow defeat at the hands of Eastern New Mexico. The loss snapped a 13-game home winning streak, but this season the Mustangs are 9-1 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, where tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Eastern New Mexico shot 51 percent from the field and was 9-of-20 from 3-point range in a 70-69 win over MSU on Thursday night. Cougar Downing led the way for the Greyhounds with 19 points, and the Mustangs saw their overall record fall to 14-5, while their Lone Star Conference record dropped to 9-4.
Pierre Sanders was perfect from the field against the Greyhounds, hitting all seven of his field-goal attempts, including three shots from beyond the arc. Sanders also made his only free throw of the game, completing a 3-point play early in the second half on his way to an 18-point performance.
Sanders is the second-leading scorer for the Mustangs this season with 12.9 points per game, and he is shooting 52.6 percent from the field (92 of 175). Sanders is shooting 48.3 percent from 3-point range (29 of 60) and is an 84.2 percent free-throw shooter (32 of 38).
The fifth-year senior guard from Hutto, Texas, is second in the conference with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.64, and he is fifth in the league with 3.9 assists per game.
Mason Gibson scored 20 points and was one of four players to score in double figures against ENMU. Gibson, who is the fourth-leading scorer in the LSC with 16.6 points per game, has scored double figures in 16 of his 18 appearances this season, and scored at least 20 points in six games.
Sanders is facing West Texas A&M for the ninth time in his career and has averaged 17.4 points per game against the Buffaloes. He scored a career high 36 points in a 92-86 win over WT in January of 2023.
Will Shepherd averages 9.4 points per game and is the second-leading rebounder for the Mustangs with 5.2 boards per game.
Reggie Hill is the leading rebounder for MSU and sixth in the conference with 6.7 boards per game. The reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week has started the last seven games for MSU and has scored 48 points and grabbed 48 rebounds in that span. The 6-8 senior forward from Melbourne, Florida is averaging 7.2 points per game.
Bakari LaStrap, who missed the first eight games of the season due to injury, scores 8.9 points per game for the Mustangs with 3.2 assists and three rebounds per game. LaStrap shoots 44.9 percent from the field (35 of 78) and has hit 27-of-34 free throws (79.4 percent).
Jonathan Jackson hits 2.3 3-pointers per game and averages 8.7 points per game for the Mustangs. The 6-4 guard from Sachse, Texas, was 10-of-20 from 3-point range and scored 36 points in the in the first three games of the homestand.
The Mustangs are second in the LSC and ninth in the nation with a 3-point shooting percentage of 39, hitting 9.9 3-pointers per game, which leads the conference. MSU has hit at least 10 3-pointers in 11 games this season, including eight of the last 10 contests.
Midwestern State has an effective field goal percentage of 54.1 percent, which is third-best in the LSC. Effective field goal percentage accounts for the added value of three-point shots. MSU attempts the most 3-point shots in the LSC with 25.4 attempts per game.
Midwestern State is the fifth-highest scoring team in the LSC with 78.8 points per game while holding opponents to 67.4 points, which is the fifth-best scoring defense in the league. The plus-11.4 scoring margin is third-best in the LSC and 21st among NCAA Division II programs.
The Mustangs are 10th in the nation and lead the league with a field goal percentage defense of 39.7 percent, and opponents are only hitting 30.4 percent of their 3-point attempts against the LSC's third-best 3-point percentage defense.
Sanders and Gibson lead the Mustangs with 34 and 32 steals respectively, and MSU is fourth in the league with 8.8 steals per game. Midwestern State is forcing 13.6 turnovers per game while only committing 11.3 turnovers, which is fourth-fewest in the LSC.
Midwestern State is committing the fewest fouls in the LSC with 14.2 per game, which is the 21st-fewest among NCAA Division II programs.
The Stang Gang is fifth in the conference with 37.7 rebounds per game, and second in the league with 27 defensive rebounds per game.
West Texas A&M leads the all-time series with Midwestern State, 47-35, but the Buffaloes are 12-23 when visiting MSU.
Last month, the Mustangs claimed their first victory in Canyon, Texas, since 2016 as Sanders hit a pair of tough baskets in the final minute to lead Midwestern State to a 70-69 win over then No. 13-ranked West Texas A&M. Sanders scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the second half, including eight points over the last 2 1/2 minutes.
Midwestern State's zone defense forced West Texas A&M into a half-court game as the Buffs managed just 14 points in the paint, three second-chance points, and just five transition points. WT was also limited to 11 trips to the charity stripe and was outscored by nine points in the second half despite shooting 54.2 percent from the field.
West Texas A&M is 13-7 overall this season with an 8-6 record in conference play. The Buffaloes are 5-5 on the road this season.
Ahamed Mohammed, a 6-1 junior guard, is the leading scorer in the LSC with 17.5 points per game, and Noah Pagotto is seventh in the league with 15.7 points per game.
Pagotto paced West Texas A&M with 15 points, while Mohammed scored 13 points in the first meeting with the Mustangs.
The Buffaloes are the fourth-highest scoring team in the conference with 79.1 points per game, and they are holding opponents to 70.9 points, which is seventh-best in the LSC.
Jailyn Sledge leads WT and is fifth in the conference with 6.8 rebounds per game. He also averages 2.2 steals per contest, which leads the league. Sledge has a total of 40 steals for the Buffaloes, who average 7.8 steals per game.
West Texas A&M is the third-best rebounding team in the league with 37.9 boards per game, including 11.3 offensive rebounds per game.
The Buffaloes force 15.6 turnovers per game and their plus-4.4 turnover margin is third best in the LSC and 18th among NCAA Division II programs.
Head coach Tom Brown is in his 11th season with WT and has won more than 80 percent of his games at the helm. West Texas A&M is 279-69 since he took the reins.
