Mustangs look to move over .500 in LSC, host Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has won four of its last five games and improved its conference record to 6-6 after defeating Cameron on Thursday night, 67-61. The Mustangs seek a third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon as Oklahoma Christian visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Midwestern State is 8-10 overall this season and has a six-game home winning streak. The Mustangs are 7-2 under the dome this season and are playing the second game of a four-game homestand.

Freshman Kerbie Cash erupted for a career-high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while senior Zarria Carter logged her fifth consecutive double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Cameron.

Carter leads NCAA Division II players with 13 double-doubles this season, and Cash is second in the conference with seven double-doubles, including three in her last four games.

Carter is leading the Lone Star Conference in both scoring and rebounding. The 6-0 senior from Mansfield, Texas, averages 19.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. Carter is the 12th-leading scorer in NCAA Division II and the sixth-leading rebounder.

Carter also has the second-best field goal percentage in the LSC, hitting 54.2 percent of her shots. She is 142 of 262 from the field, leading the conference in field goals and attempts.

Cash is the second-leading scorer for Midwestern State with 12.1 points per game, and she is also the second-leading rebounder with 7.3 boards per contest. The freshman from Wylie, Texas, is averaging 13.9 points against LSC opponents while grabbing 8.4 rebounds in conference games.

Carter and Cash are both among the LSC top-10 in free-throws made and attempted. Carter is 75 of 104 (72.1 percent), and Cash is 62 of 86 (72.1 percent). Carter has the second-most attempts from the foul line, and Cash has the third-most tries in the LSC.

The Mustangs have taken the most free-throw attempts per game in the conference with 20.6 and are shooting 68.6 percent from the free-throw line as a team.

The Mustangs are third in the league with 42.3 rebounds per game, which is 27th in the nation, and they are grabbing 14.8 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in the conference and 27th among NCAA Division II programs.

Midwestern State is scoring 61.7 points per game and holding its opponents to 62.4 points per game.

Carisa Cortez is dishing out 3.2 assists per game, which is sixth in the conference, and she boasts the fifth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league at 1.2.

Midwestern State is forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the conference at 18.7 per game, and the Stangs are second in the league with 11.3 steals per game.

Carter leads the LSC with 46 total steals. Emillia Steele, Calyssa Sevier and Cash are sixth in the conference with 31 steals apiece.

The Mustangs are holding opponents to 38.2 percent shooting from the field, and 26.3 percent from 3-point range, which is the third-best 3-point percentage defense in the LSC.

Midwestern State is blocking 2.34 shots per game, and Carter is averaging 0.78 blocks per game, which is 11th in the league.

The Mustangs have won their last four meetings with Oklahoma Christian, and MSU leads the all-time series, 11-9, following a 76-74 victory at Payne Athletic Center last season. Carter scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots in the victory. Catalina Cortez finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State has won six of its last seven encounters with the Eagles and boasts an 8-3 record when hosting Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles have lost their last seven visits and have not won at D.L. Ligon Coliseum since a 68-53 victory in December of 1983.

The Eagles arrive in Wichita Falls with a 6-10 overall record and a 3-9 mark against LSC opponents. The Eagles have a four-game losing streak and have lost six of their last seven games following a 72-52 loss at Lubbock Christian on Thursday night.

Kate Bradley scored a career-high 22 points, grabbed four rebounds and finished with one assist and one steal in the loss, which dropped the OC road record to 1-4.

Bradley is scoring 14.4 points per game for the Eagles and is shooting 37.2 percent from 3-point range (45 of 121), which is fourth in the conference. The 5-8 senior guard leads the league and is 16th in the nation with 2.8 3-pointers per game. Only Grace Foster of Lubbock Christian has hit more 3-pointers in the LSC with 47.

Bradley is playing more than 38 minutes per game, which is the second most among NCAA Division II players. She owns the third-best free-throw percentage in the league at 83.8 (57 of 68) and is dishing out 2.9 assists per game.

Oklahoma Christian leads the league with 15.4 made free throws per game and has the fourth-best free-throw percentage in the LSC at 75.8 percent (247 of 326). The Eagles attempt the second-most free throws in the conference. Only Midwestern State has more chances from the free-throw line per game.

Nakia Cullom is scoring 10.2 points per game and is pulling down 5.1 rebounds per contest for the Eagles, who are corralling 32.5 caroms per game — 13th in the LSC.

Oklahoma Christian is scoring 62.5 points per game and conceding 65.2. Its minus-2.7 scoring margin is 12th in the league.

Midwestern State continues its four-game homestand on Thursday as Eastern New Mexico visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
