Midwestern State thriving at home as Oklahoma Christian visits Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to extend its home winning streak to 13 games as Oklahoma Christian visits the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Mason Gibson scored 21 points and was one of six players to score in double figures as the Mustangs crushed Cameron on Thursday night, 98-66. MSU hit six of its first seven shots from beyond the arc and established an early 12-point lead. Reggie Hill had four of the 14 steals for the Mustangs, who improved their overall record to 13-4, and they are 8-3 in the Lone Star Conference. MSU is 8-0 at home this season.

Gibson is the sixth-leading scorer in the conference with 16.2 points per game and has scored double figures in 14 of 16 games.

Pierre Sanders is the second-leading scorer for the Mustangs this season with 12.8 points per game, and he is shooting 50.9 percent from the field (82 of 161). Sanders is shooting 46.3 percent from 3-point range (25 of 54) and is an 82.9 percent free-throw shooter (29 of 35).

The fifth-year senior from Hutto, Texas, is second in the conference with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.79, and he is fifth in the league with 3.9 assists per game.

Sanders is making his sixth appearance against the Eagles. He has averaged nine points and 2.8 assists against Oklahoma Christian.

Bakari LaStrap, who missed the first eight games of the season due to injury, is scoring 10.1 points per game for the Mustangs and averaging three rebounds and three assists per game since his return. LaStrap is shooting 52.3 percent from the field (34 of 65) and has hit 26-of-32 free throws (81.3 percent).

Will Shepherd is averaging 9.5 points per game and is the second-leading rebounder for the Mustangs with 5.4 boards per game. At home this season, the 6-8 senior forward from Dallas is averaging 10.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

Jonathan Jackson is hitting 2.2 3-pointers per game and is averaging 8.5 points per game for the Mustangs. The 6-4 guard from Sachse, Texas, was 4-of-6 from 3-point range and scored 16 points in the win over Cameron on Thursday, as the Mustangs shot 52 percent (14 of 27) from beyond the arc against the Aggies.

The Mustangs are second in the LSC and 17th in the nation with a 3-point shooting percentage of 38.6, hitting 9.6 3-pointers per game, which leads the conference.

Midwestern State has an effective field goal percentage of 54.1 percent, which is fourth-best in the LSC. Effective field goal percentage accounts for the added value of three-point shots. MSU attempts the second-most 3-point shots in the LSC with 24.8 attempts per game.

Midwestern State is the fifth-highest scoring team in the LSC with 78.8 points per game while holding opponents to 67.8 points, which is the sixth-best scoring defense in the league. The plus-10.9 scoring margin is third-best in the LSC.

The Mustangs are 11th in the nation and lead the league with a field goal percentage defense of 40 percent, and opponents are only hitting 30 percent of their 3-point attempts against the LSC's third-best 3-point percentage defense.

Sanders and Gibson lead the Mustangs with 27 and 25 steals respectively, and MSU is fifth in the league with 8.4 steals per game. Midwestern State is forcing 13.4 turnovers per game while only committing 11.8 turnovers, which is fourth-fewest in the LSC.

Midwestern State is committing the fewest fouls in the LSC with 14 per game, which is the 19th-fewest among NCAA Division II programs.

The Stang Gang is fifth in the conference with 37.6 rebounds per game, led by Hill, who is seventh in the LSC, grabbing 6.4 rebounds per game.

Hill has started the last five games, and he has scored 34 points while securing 30 rebounds in those games for MSU. The 6-8 senior forward from Melbourne, Florida, grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in three different games at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season, most recently in an 82-53 win over Western New Mexico on Jan. 9. He also had 12 boards in wins over Adams State and St. Edward's.

Oklahoma Christian has won three of its last four meetings with the Mustangs and dealt Midwestern State a devastating 62-61 loss at Payne Athletic Center last season. Quinton Johnson's 3-pointer from the top of the key with six seconds remaining doomed the Mustangs.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 27-16, and is 15-4 when hosting the Eagles, who shot 50 percent from the field and won their last visit to D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 79-72, in January of 2023.

The Eagles, who have lost their first seven road games, enter this year's matchup with a 6-11 overall record and a 3-9 mark in the LSC.

Oklahoma Christian is scoring 73.5 points per game and allowing its opponents to score 77.7 points per contest. The minus-4.2 scoring margin is 14th in the conference.

Kenodre Young is the ninth-leading scorer in the LSC with 15.4 points per game, but the senior from Del City, Oklahoma, did not play in the game at Lubbock Christian on Thursday.

Bryce Kennedy and Marco Foster each scored 12 points to lead the scoring against the Chaparrals at Rip Griffin Center. Foster is averaging 14.1 points per game, and Kennedy has pitched in 12.4 points per game.

Foster is seventh in the nation and leading the LSC with a 3-point shooting percentage of 47.3 (53 of 112). The senior from Lancaster, Texas, has made the second-most 3-pointer in the conference and taken the fifth most shots from beyond the arc.

The Eagles are hitting 38.1 percent of their shots from long range, which is third-best in the LSC but they only attempt 17.6 3-point shots per game, which is fourth fewest among LSC teams.
Oklahoma Christian is the fourth-best free-throw shooting team in the conference, converting 71.9 percent of its 21.9 free-throw attempts per game, which is fourth-most in the league. The 15.6 made free throws per contest is third-most in the LSC.

Kennedy is the leading rebounder with 5.3 boards per game for the Eagles, who are 14th in the conference with 31.6 rebounds per game. The rebounding margin of minus-0.5 is 12th in the league.

Javon Grant is second in the conference with 4.8 assists per game, and OC averages 13.1 assists as a team. The senior from Pittsburg, Kansas, is playing the seventh-most minutes in the LSC at 32:47 per contest.

The assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.9 at Oklahoma Christian is 14th in the league, and the Eagles commit the fourth-most turnovers in the conference with 15.5 per game. OC forces the third-fewest turnovers in the LSC with 11.5 per contest.

Foster is 10th in the league with 29 steals and averages 1.7 steals per game, which is sixth-best in the conference.


The four-game homestand continues next week for the Mustangs as they host Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
