WICHITA FALLS, TX -- Bakari LaStrap came off the bench and scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals as Midwestern State defeated Sul Ross State, 88-62, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs (11-3, 6-2) had four players score in double figures, including Reggie Hill, who made his second straight start and finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Will Shepherd chipped in 11 points and pulled down six rebounds for Midwestern State. The Mustangs bench outscored the Sul Ross State reserves, 50-21.
Midwestern State out-rebounded Sul Ross State 54-30 and its 28 offensive rebounds led to 21 second chance points.
Midwestern State's defense held Sul Ross State to only 38.6 percent shooting from the field, including 20.7 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-15 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 7-0 run with 11:24 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Mason Gibson, to increase its lead to 25-15. The Mustangs then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 42-28 advantage. Midwestern State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 42 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Midwestern State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 76-57 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Vojin Mastilovic's three-pointer, to grow the lead to 82-57 with 1:45 to go in the contest. The Mustangs kept expanding the margin and cruised to an 88-62 victory in its first conference matchup with Sul Ross State.
