Mustangs rack up 50 kills in sweep of Western New Mexico

PORTALES, NM --The Midwestern State volleyball team totaled 50 kills on the way to a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-20, 25-11) against the Western New Mexico Mustangs Friday at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

The non-conference victory improved the Mustangs' overall record to 5-5 on the season.

The Mustangs offense was paced by Demi Stauffenberg, who finished with 12 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .29, and by Isabella Dickens, who had 11 while hitting .588. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Jenna Redding had 15 and Alayna Guerrero had 10.

>> Midwestern State sophomore setter Alayna Guerrero completed her first double-double of the season with 22 set assists and 10 digs.
>> MSU sophomore middle hitter Isabella Dickens matched a campaign-high by finishing with 11 kills for the second-straight match. She is hitting .512 with 24 kills and three errors in wins over Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico. She also was in on four blocks against the Mustangs.
>> Junior outside hitter Demi Stauffenberg notched her seventh match with at least 10 kills this season. She put down a team-best 12 kills, while hitting .333, a season high.
>> Midwestern State finished with 49 team kills over three sets for the second-straight match. The Mustang also combined for a campaign-best .378 team hitting percentage.
>> Sophomore Jenna Redding led MSU with 14 digs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Mustangs won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-17. Midwestern State opened up its biggest lead, eight points, to finish off the set, collecting 19 kills along the way.

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Midwestern State put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-20 victory in set number two. The Mustangs took the set thanks to a strong performance on the attacking side. Midwestern State put together a .350 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Mustangs rallied from down six at 10-4 to grab the win.

SET 3 | Midwestern State finished off the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning the third set. The Mustangs took control of the set early when the score was 2-1 and never looked back to win 25-11. Midwestern State ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 14 points, to finish off the set. Midwestern State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Western New Mexico attacks in the stanza.
