Mustangs seek fifth straight win to start season at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo.-- Midwestern State, the seventh-highest scoring team in NCAA Division II women's soccer, is on the road to face Missouri Southern at Hal Bodon Field on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Mustangs are off to the best start in the history of the program with a 4-0-0 record. Midwestern State kept its record unblemished with a 1-0 victory at Oklahoma Baptist in its first away match of the 2024 campaign on Saturday.

Nyxalee Munoz of Odessa, Texas, converted a free kick from inside the offensive end of half way in the 56th minute for her second goal of the season overall and her first game-winning goal for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State arrives in Joplin with a plus-9 goal differential and is attempting 20.5 shots per match, which is second-most in the Lone Star Conference and fifth-most among all NCAA Division II programs.

Madison Brinkley leads the LSC and is seventh in the nation with four goals this season. Cassidy Savoy has scored three goals, which is second-most in the conference and 21st in the nation.

Brinkley and Savoy each lead the conference with eight points. Savoy has two assists for the Mustangs.

Brinkley and Savoy have each been recognized as the LSC Offensive Player of the Week in the first two weeks of the campaign.

Brinkley earned the honor this past week after becoming the first freshman in the history of the program to record goals in her first three games.

Allessandra Romano leads the LSC and is fifth in the nation with three assists this season. The senior from Canada finished last season with five goals and two assists for MSU.

Sophomore Allison Dellis is the reigning LSC Goalkeeper of the Week after making nine saves and shutting out Oklahoma Baptist in the 1-0 victory on Saturday. Dellis made eight saves in the 2-1 win over Fort Lewis on Thursday afternoon at Stang Park.

Missouri Southern is 0-2-2 to start the season with an 0-2-1 record at Hal Bodon Field. The Lions are coming off a 2-1 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State as Nathalia Luiz scored her second goal of the season in the 78th minute.

Luiz scored an 85th-minute goal in the season opener as MSSU played a 1-1 draw with Colorado Christian before succumbing to Texas Woman's, 2-0, in its first match against an LSC opponent this season.

Midwestern State is facing Missouri Southern for the first time in the history of the program.

The Mustangs open the conference campaign with an away match at Lubbock Christian on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. The next home match is an 11 a.m. kickoff against UT Tyler on Sept. 28.
