Fort Lewis visits Stang Park to face high-scoring MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State, the highest scoring team in the Lone Star Conference, wraps up a three-match homestand to start the season by hosting Fort Lewis at Stang Park on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs were impressive in their first two home matches, defeating Western Colorado, 6-1, and dispatching Central Oklahoma, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Cassidy Savoy earned LSC Offensive Player of the Week with three goals and two assists in the two games. The fifth-year senior from Fort Worth recorded her fourth career brace to go along with an assist against the Mountaineers. She added a goal and an assist in the victory over Central Oklahoma.

Savoy has 17 career goals and 11 assists. The forward finished last season with four goals and three assists. She scored six goals and had a career-high 16 points in her sophomore season. Savoy has started 40 of the last 42 matches for the Mustangs.

Madison Brinkley and Sarah Hayes each have two goals, and Alessandra Romano has two assists for Midwestern State, which has started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2010.

Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Dellis has 11 saves and stopped a Rebekah George penalty kick in the 74th minute against Central Oklahoma to preserve a 2-1 lead for the Mustangs, who scored nine minutes later to secure their first win in five tries against the Bronchos.

Fort Lewis has already faced two opponents from the LSC and is coming off a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in Portales on Saturday. The Skyhawks opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Lubbock Christian.

Four different players have scored goals for Fort Lewis. Albila Tapia, Danielle Gonzales, Gabi Meraz-Fishbein and Ashly Salas. Salas scored the equalizer against Lubbock Christian in the 85th minute.

Through two matches, Fort Lewis is averaging 20 shots and its opponents are averaging just seven shots per game.

Midwestern State is 4-6-3 in the all-time series and suffered a 3-0 loss to the Skyhawks last season when the two sides clashed in Gunnison, Colorado. Fort Lewis outshot the Mustangs, 13-12, and had seven shots on goal, while the Mustangs put five shots on frame.

Midwestern State plays its first away match on Saturday with a trip to Shawnee, Oklahoma, for a noon meeting with Oklahoma Baptist.
