Mustangs earn quarterfinal berth with 5-0 win over Queen's College

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Midwestern State cruised into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory over Queens College in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship at Salando Park Tennis Center on Monday morning.

The Mustangs will make their third appearance in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals and their first since 2017, when Midwestern State defeated Indiana (Pa.), 5-0, before succumbing to Armstrong State (Ga.), 5-2.

Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga won their fifth straight doubles match as the 21st-ranked duo defeated the 46th-ranked pairing of Maja Makal and Sara Berggren at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Sydney Williams and Sarah Mazaraki eased past Kyra Bergmann and Ana Tarbujaru at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, to give the Mustangs the early 1-0 advantage.

Binzari, ranked No. 14 among Division II singles players, scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Eva Rivoal at No. 1 singles for her ninth straight win in singles, and the junior from Romania improved her season record to 14-8.

Hannah Yip extended her winning streak in singles to 12 straight matches as she breezed past Caroline Hany-Fawzy at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Yip, a junior from Malaysia, is 18-5 for the Mustangs with 13 wins coming in straight sets. Yip is ranked No. 41 in singles.

Skylar Minns, a senior from Port Aransas, Texas, clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Sara Berggren. Minns is 14-7 this season with an 11-5 record at No. 5 singles.

Ghinga was also able to complete her match at No. 2 singles, and the junior from Romania earned her team-leading 22nd win of the year with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Makal. Ghinga, who is ranked No. 31 in the nation, improved to 22-2 for the season.

Sofia Giraldo and Sydney Williams did not complete their matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively. Giraldo and Williams each won the first set of their singles matches.

Giraldo was paired with Yip at No. 2 doubles, but the match was also unfinished with the Mustangs leading 3-2 in the opening set.

Midwestern State plays Wingate (N.C.) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. EDT.

Wingate eliminated Angelo State with a 4-2 victory in the quarterfinals.
