Mustangs look to extend winning streak against visiting Javelinas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has won five of its last six games and is on a four-game winning streak as Texas A&M-Kingsville arrives at Mustangs Park for a three-game series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m. The series concludes with a 1 p.m. game on Wednesday.

SERIES HISTORY | Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Javelinas, 24-23, but TAMUK has won the last 16 meetings. The Mustangs last defeated TAMUK in the first game of a doubleheader at Mustangs Park in April of 2016, 9-2. The Javelinas won the nightcap, 10-1, in five innings to begin their current streak against MSU. Midwestern State is 11-7 when hosting TAMUK, but the Javelinas swept a doubleheader at Mustangs Park in 2022, winning 12-1 in five innings and 12-5 in the nightcap. Last season, Carissa De Los Santos hurled a no-hitter for the Javelinas, who scored the winning run in the seventh inning and defeated Midwestern State, 1-0, in the second game of a doubleheader. TAMUK won the opener, 3-1, as Annisa Lechner drove in a run and scored for the Javelinas. Andrea Martinez pitched a shutout in her first collegiate start, and Matisen Onofrei belted a grand slam to help TAMUK complete a series sweep of Midwestern State, 13-0 in five innings.
 

Mustangs Notes

- Midwestern State (10-29, 8-22 LSC) swept a three-game series with Western New Mexico over the weekend. Addison Lindemann struck out a career-high 13 batters en route to her seventh complete game of the season and improved to 5-9 in a 4-2 victory to open the series. Paige Gallegos provided the offensive punch with a three-run homer, and Camile Nunez followed with a solo shot. In the second game, Allie Monroe led off the sixth inning with her sixth home run of the season to tie the game, 2-2. With two outs in the inning, Nunez singled and reached third base on a throwing error. Megan Ayala delivered an RBI double to centerfield to give Midwestern State the lead. Florence pitched 2 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three batters. The freshman pitcher from Humble, Texas, earned her first collegiate victory. In the series finale, Florence picked up her first save of the season as she worked three innings and allowed just one hit without a walk and struck out two. Kennedy Cameron earned the win, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and threw 41 of 62 pitches for strikes. Nunez was 3-for-3 and hit her second home run of the series in the sixth inning. Monroe was 2-for-3 with two base hits on Sunday and finished the series 5-for-9 with two doubles and a home run. Nunez was 5-for-8 in the three-game set with two home runs and two stolen bases.

- Sophomore slugger Allie Monroe leads the team with a .294 batting average, eight doubles, two triples, and six homers while driving in 21 runs. Monroe has the best slugging percentage among the Mustangs at .569, and she leads the team with 62 total bases this season. The Lawton, Oklahoma, native leads the squad with a .381 on-base percentage. Monroe has scored a run in eight of her last 12 games and leads the Stangs with 17 runs scored this season.

- Freshman outfielder Paige Gallegos has a .256 batting average with five doubles, four home runs, and 19 RBIs. Gallegos has nine multi-hit games this season and had a five-game hitting streak snapped against WNMU. She hit .444 against Eastern New Mexico (4-for-9) with a double, a homer and two RBIs in the series. The Iowa Park, Texas, native is second on the team with 310 hits and 48 total bases. She is 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts.

- Nunez, a senior shortstop, has a six-game hitting streak for the second time this season. She opened the season with a six-game hitting streak and has at least one hit in 27 of her 39 games for the Mustangs. Nunez is tied for second on the team with 31 hits, and the transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce has two home runs, four doubles and a triple this season with eight RBIs. Nunez played for head coach Brittanie Talley at Vernon Junior College.

- Sophomore catcher Megan Ayala is hitting .219 with an on-base percentage of .303. Ayala has hit six doubles, a home run and has nine RBIs for the Mustangs. She is tied for second in the LSC with eight sacrifice bunts this season. Ayala has thrown out 12 of 32 base stealers and has committed only five errors with a team-leading 238 chances behind the plate this season.

- Senior Kennedy Cameron (2-7) has a 4.32 ERA for the Mustangs. The Longview native has allowed 42 earned runs on 54 hits with 70 strikeouts and 58 walks in 68 innings. She ranks ninth in the LSC with a .213 opponent batting average. Cameron threw 126 pitches in a one-hit shutout against UTPB. She struck out 12 Falcons and only issued two walks in the 5-0 win on March 3. Cameron has the 12th-most strikeouts in the conference and is averaging 7.2 strikeouts per seven innings pitched, which is fifth-best in the LSC.

Addison Lindemann (4-9) leads the team with 21 appearances in the circle and has thrown the most innings among Mustang pitchers with 103 1/3 innings pitched. In her last nine appearances, Lindemann has 0.85 ERA, allowing just six earned runs over 48 2/3 innings with 41 strikeouts in that span. For the season, Lindemann has a team-leading 3.52 ERA and 87 strikeouts. Lindemann struck out a career-high 13 batters en route to her seventh complete game of the season and improved to 5-9 in a 4-2 victory over Western New Mexico on April 6. The freshman from Holliday, Texas, pitched a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 win at ENMU on March 29. She had a nine strikeout performance in her first start against the Greyhounds — a 4-2 victory on March 28. Lindemann had an eight-inning outing at TWU, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks in a 2-1 triumph. She also worked 1 2/3 innings of relief in the final game of the series at TWU and allowed just one hit in the 3-1 loss. Lindemann threw a complete game two-hitter against No. 6-ranked UT Tyler on March 9 and allowed just two earned runs. The right-hander had four strikeouts and three walks in the 4-3 loss to the Patriots. Lindemann had seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss at UTPB on March 2. Lindemann pitched the final two innings of a 6-5 eight-inning win at UTPB in the nightcap on March 2 and earned her first win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out three Falcons. Lindemann made her collegiate debut as a relief pitcher against Colorado Mesa at Scrap Yard Sports in Conroe, Texas. Lindemann worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out six Mavericks in the 4-3 loss on Feb. 2. The following day, Lindemann worked 8 2/3 innings of relief without allowing an earned run on four hits and struck out six in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to Rogers State. Lindemann threw a season-high 149 pitches against the Hillcats. She also contributes the Mustangs offense, Lindemann is 12-for-44 at the plate (.273) with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs this season. Lindemann has a hit in seven of her last eight games and is hitting .346 (9-for-26) in that span.

- Midwestern State has turned 15 double plays this season, which is sixth-most in the LSC and 24th-most among NCAA Division II programs.

- Mustang batters have laid down 27 sacrifice bunts, which is fifth-most in the conference and 53rd-most in the nation.

- MSU is 3-9 in one-run games this season and 2-5 in extra-inning contests.

SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS | Texas A&M-Kingsville is 25-16 with an 18-15 record in the LSC…The Javelinas halted a five-game slide with a 3-1 victory at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday… TAMUK is 9-9 on the road this season…Senior third baseman Aaliyah Ortiz hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season with a two-run blast in the three-run third inning at Oklahoma Christian… Ortiz also leads the Javelinas with 12 doubles and 45 RBIs… Senior outfielder Breanna Carr leads the team and is ninth in the conference with a .379 batting average… Carr is fourth in the conference with 55 hits, including seven doubles and two triples…Carr also leads the team with eight stolen bases on 10 attempts… Senior infielder Kayla Gonzalez is second on the team with a .364 batting average, and she has seven home runs with 12 doubles this season… TAMUK is fifth in the league with 31 home runs and 208 runs scored… Senior pitcher Beth Montes (12-7, 3.83) has 28 appearances with 20 starts in the circle. Montes has 10 complete games and has allowed 138 hits over 122 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .283 with 15 home runs and 14 doubles against Montez, who is seventh in the conference with 82 strikeouts and has issued 38 walks… Junior pitcher Carissa De Los Santos (7-7, 3.22) has 16 starts and 21 appearances with eight complete games for the Javelinas. De Los Santos has allowed 97 hits in 95 innings, and opponents are hitting .261 with nine home runs, 10 doubles and four triples. De Los Santos has 34 strikeouts and 36 walks issued… The Javelinas staff is eighth in the LSC with a 3.56 ERA and fourth in the conference with 132 strikeouts…TAMUK is hitting .288 as a team, and its opponents are hitting .275… Javelinas are 30 of 39 in stolen bases, and opponents are 51 of 59… TAMUK is ninth in the conference with 44 errors…

NEXT UP | Midwestern State travels to San Antonio for a three-game series at St. Mary's Softball Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader with the Rattlers begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the series concludes with a noon game on Sunday.
