THACKERVILLE, Oklahoma -- Each of Midwestern State's five golfers logged at least one par-or-better score in the opening two rounds of the Lone Star Conference Championship Monday afternoon on the Scissortail Course at the WinStar Golf Club.
The high-level performances allowed the Mustangs to post par-or-better team scores of 284 and 288 for a 4-under, two-round total of 572. The tally has MSU in second place, just four strokes behind Dallas Baptist, which fired scores of 286 and 282 for an 8-under 568.
More importantly, Midwestern State is in prime position to claim one of four berths into medal match play with Oklahoma Christian (578/+2) and UT Tyler (579/+3) in third and fourth place, respectively. West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico are tied for fifth and eight strokes behind MSU with 4-over totals of 580.
The final round of stroke play begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
The medal match semifinals follow Wednesday at 8 a.m. with the finals set for the afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Sophomore
Seth Bearden recorded his 12th and 13th par-or-better rounds and ninth score in the 60s this season, logging a 3-under 69 in the opening round before closing the day with even-par 72.< br="">
Bearden's 36-hole total of 141 has him in fourth place and six strokes off of the pace of Oklahoma Christian's Leandro Mihaich, who posted scores of 68 and 67 for a 9-under 165.
Mihaich carries a three-stroke lead over Dallas Baptist's Sam Jenkins (69-69) and Cameron's Rudy Sautron (69-69) into the final round.
Midwestern State junior
Trevor Walsh finished opening day tied for eighth with scores of 69 and 74 for a 1-under 143, while senior
Robert Garcia (74-71) is tied for 16th with a 1-over 145.
Senior
Keaton Dickens chased an opening round 76 with a 1-under 71 in the second loop to tie for 29th with a 3-over 147, while junior
Gatlin Goad logged an even-par 72 in the first round on the way to a tie for 47th place with a 7-over 151.
