WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State extended its winning streak to nine and continued its domination of Lone Star Conference opponents by defeating UT Tyler, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs have won 29 of a possible 35 points in their last five dual matches, and they now boasts a 16-3 overall record with an 8-0 mark in the LSC. Midwestern State played its final home dual match of the regular season and finished with a 9-0 record at MSU Tennis Center.
Midwestern State took the early lead as
Hannah Yip and
Shreya Chakraborty clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Elisa Buhagiar and Kanika Sivaraman at No. 2 doubles.
Sydney Williams and
Sarah Mazaraki won their third consecutive match at No. 3 doubles for MSU with a 6-1 victory in less than 30 minutes over Anna Melnik and Luisa Moraes. Muskan Gupta and Yelena Kim of UT Tyler pulled out a 6-4 win over the No. 27-ranked pairing of
Jessica Binzari and
Anda Ghinga at No. 1 doubles.
Ghinga, ranked No. 30 in singles, rebounded from the loss in doubles with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 win over Sivaraman at No. 2 singles. Ghinga has a five-match winning streak for the Mustangs and is 17-1 in singles matches this season.
No. 39-ranked
Hannah Yip continued her extraordinary form with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yelena Kim at No. 3 singles. Yip has an eight-match winning streak and her last seven wins in singles have all come in straight sets. Yip is 14-5 overall and 8-1 in home matches this season.
Skylar Minns clinched the victory for MSU with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Anna Melnik at No. 4 singles. Minns improved her record to 11-6 and has won seven of her last eight matches.
Binzari, ranked No. 32 in singles, rallied for an impressive, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over 11th-ranked Muskan Gupta. Binzari has a four-match winning streak and improved to 9-8 overall. Gupta is the fifth nationally ranked opponent Binzari has faced this season. It is the fourth time Binzari has played an opponent ranked among the top-15 in the nation.
Sydney Williams has a 10-match winning streak for the Mustangs after taking a see-saw affair with Buhagiar, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Williams is 10-1 overall and improved to 3-0 at No. 5 singles.
Micaela McSpadden played a long match at No. 6 singles but succumbed to Moraes, 7-5, 6-1. McSpadden is 5-5 this season with a 2-2 record against conference opponents.
Midwestern State travels to Arkansas-Fort Smith for its penultimate dual match of the regular season on Friday. First serve is at 1 p.m.
