Yip and Ghinga win tiebreaks, lead Mustangs to second win over top-five foe

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Hannah Yip defeated No. 3-ranked Maja Jung at No. 1 singles, and Midwestern State pulled out an impressive 4-3 dual-match victory over No. 5-ranked Washburn on Saturday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs defeated a top-five team for the second time in eight days after defeating third-ranked West Alabama at the UT Tyler Invitational last week.

Yip pulled the Mustangs even with the Ichabods, who claimed the doubles point to start the day.

No. 5-ranked Jung and Lara Schmid earned a 7-5 victory over Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga at No. 1 doubles. Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs defeated Sofia Giraldo and Sydney William, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. Yip and Sarah Mazaraki were tied with Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson at 6-6 when the point was clinched and did not finish the set.

Yip played No. 1 singles for the first time in her collegiate career at MSU and improved to 4-2 for the season. The junior from Malaysia took the point in the first singles match that was completed, defeating Jung, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Peyton Koper reclaimed the lead for Washburn with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Skylar Minns at No. 4 singles. Minns is 1-1 at No. 4 singles and 3-3 overall this season.

Ghinga, who had won five consecutive matches at No. 3 singles, conquered No. 2 singles by defeating Ubachs in an ultra-tight match, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3).

Giraldo, the freshman from Colombia, earned a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Schmid in her first match at No. 3 singles. Giraldo is 1-1 in three-set matches and 3-2 for the season after playing her first four collegiate matches at No. 4 singles.

Isabella Martensson kept Washburn in the dual match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shreya Chakraborty at No. 6 singles.

The dual match was decided at No. 5 singles. Micaela McSpadden was forced into a third set by Cady Lynn after winning the first set at love. The sophomore from Oologah, Oklahoma, rose to the occasion and clinched the victory for the Stang Gang with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 triumph to close out the day.

Midwestern State hosts McKendree at MSU Tennis Center on Sunday. The dual match gets underway at 1 p.m.
