WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 13 Midwestern State quickly dispatched McKendree (Ill.) by a 6-1 margin to roll to improve to 5-2 on the season Sunday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs broke out of a five-match skid in doubles by sweeping the point for the first time this season, then continued the momentum into singles play.
Jessica Binzari and
Anda Ghinga teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 1, while
Sarah Mazaraki and
Hannah Yip rolled to a 6-2 win at No. 2 before
Sofia Giraldo and
Sydney Williams completed the run with a 6-4 victory at No. 3.
The Mustangs sprinted to the clincher with three straight-set victories.
Freshman
Sofia Giraldo claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over McKendree's Iva Poleksic at No. 4, before junior
Hannah Yip beat Viola Cipriani 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
That set up the clincher for redshirt-junior
Anda Ghinga, who remained perfect through seven matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rhyan Cook at No. 3.
Ghinga has won 13 of her 14 sets through her first seven matches of the the season on the way to notching her 73rd career combined win.
McKendree's Camilla Fonseca put up a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over MSU's
Jessica Binzari at No. 1 to avert the team sweep.
Skylar Minns rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sofija Djunisijevic at No. 5, while
Micaela McSpadden bat Maria Solomao 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 to close out the match.
Midwestern State plays three matches in four days during a spring break trip to Florida beginning with No. 23-ranked Embry Riddle Tuesday afternoon at Daytona Beach. First serve is set for 2 p.m. (Central Time).
The Mustangs play at Rollins (Fla.) on Wednesday before closing the swing through the Sunshine State Friday at No. 21 Flagler.
