Florence flourishes, Ayala and Lindemann display power in doubleheader

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State played a pair of exciting games at Mustangs Park on Saturday afternoon, but Oklahoma Christian won both games of the doubleheader. The Eagles won the opener, 3-0, and took the nightcap in an 11-inning marathon, 4-3.

GAME 1 | Oklahoma Christian 3, Midwestern State 0

Freshman Shyanne Florence made her first start for Midwestern State and allowed just one unearned run on three hits over five innings. The right-hander threw 35 of 62 pitches for strikes, but suffered her second loss of the season in her fifth appearance for the Mustangs.

Oklahoma Christian scored in the first inning after Kiley Brewster singled and reached second base on a fielding error. Brewster moved to third base when Aaliyah Brown flied out to right field and scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Uhl set the Eagles down in order in the sixth inning but allowed two runs on five hits in the seventh inning. Whitney Walde and Kylile Janzen helped OC tack on insurance runs with RBI singles.

Grace Anderson pitched her sixth complete game for the Eagles allowing just four hits and striking out six without walking a Mustang. Anderson improved to 10-7 for the season.

GAME 2 | Oklahoma Christian 4, Midwestern State 3 (11 innings )

Sophomore catcher Megan Ayala and freshman pitcher Addison Lindemann each blasted their first home runs of the season for Midwestern State, but Oklahoma Christian clawed their way to a 4-3 win in extra innings.

The game was scoreless until Ayala led off the fourth inning with a home run to left field off OC starting pitcher Jill Dickson.

The 1-0 lead was erased in the fifth inning after Brooklin Bain drew a leadoff walk. Kiley Brewster laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to get Bain into scoring position. Kadence Brewster grounded out to third base, and Bain hustled to third for the Eagles. The senior scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Lindemann launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning after Mikey Dominguez led off the frame with a double to left field. Lindemann blasted a 2-2 pitch from Dickson well beyond the left field fence, and the Mustangs took a 3-1 lead.

Dickson was replaced in the circle after working 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Anderson was the relief pitcher and stayed in the circle for 6 1/3 innings. The junior from Tishomingo, Oklahoma, gave up just three hits and struck six Mustangs en route to her second win of the day. Anderson improved to 10-7 for the season.

Kallie Rupp came to the plate as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and delivered an RBI single after Walde and Janzen drew one-out walks. Janzen scored on a passed ball, and the Eagles tied the game, 3-3.

Kiley Brewster led off the 11th inning with a triple as left fielder Breanna Dominguez and shortstop Camile Nunez collided on a fly ball to shallow left field. Brewster scored when Brown hit into a fielder's choice.

Kennedi Cameron worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on just three hits but issued seven walks. Cameron struck out five Eagles and threw 57 of 108 pitches for strikes.

Lindemann relieved Cameron and allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts, and the freshman from Holliday, Texas, did not walk a batter. Lindemann's record fell to 2-9 for the season.

Midwestern State played the fifth 11-inning game in program history, which is the most innings an MSU team has ever played.

The Mustangs are 2-9 in one-run games this season and 2-5 in extra-inning affairs.

Midwestern State travels to Portales, New Mexico, for a three-game series with Eastern New Mexico. The doubleheader on Thursday begins at 2 p.m. CDT on Thursday, and the series concludes with a game at noon CDT on Friday.
