MSU welcomes Oklahoma Christian for three-game series

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park this week for a three-game series with Oklahoma Christian. The first game is scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY | Oklahoma Christian leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 12-5, but had a seven-game winning streak in the series snapped last season as MSU pulled out a 6-4 victory in their last meeting. The Eagles are making their first appearance at Mustangs Park since 2021, when they swept a doubleheader, 13-0 (5) and 7-2. Midwestern State is 3-5 all-time when hosting Oklahoma Christian and is 1-6 when facing the Eagles as a conference opponent.
 

Mustangs Notes

- Midwestern State (5-25, 3-18 LSC) won the opening game of a doubleheader at Texas Woman's on Sunday. Freshman Paige Gallegos slugged a two-run homer in the eighth inning, while fellow frosh Addison Lindemann went the distance to lift Midwestern State to a 2-1 win. Lindemann permitted an unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts over eight innings. Lindemann improved to 2-8 on the season. Lindemann worked her way around a pair of errors in the bottom of the frame and allowed an unearned run before striking out Tylar Lane with the bases loaded to end the game. Gallegos went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Mustangs' attack.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs jumped out to a four-run lead in the top of the first on the strength of run-scoring singles by Gallegos, Maegan Shannon, and Camille Nunez, while Myranda Jimenez tacked on another run with a squeeze bunt. MSU starter Zoe Isom allowed one hit over her first four innings before the Pioneers rallied in the fifth. Lauryn Davies delivered a two-run double and stole home as TWU scored two more unearned runs.

Midwestern State starter Kennedy Cameron took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in the final game of the series on Monday, but Lauryn Davies drilled her first collegiate homer and keyed a fifth inning rally for the Pioneers, who got all three of their hits in a three-run fifth inning. Gallegos ripped a run-scoring double to the left-field gap to plate Allie Monroe from first base in the first inning for the Mustangs' only run.

- Sophomore second baseman Kayla Bryant is hitting .389 over her last nine games (7-for-18) with two doubles and two RBIs during that span. Bryant, who has seven RBIs this season, had a six-game hitting streak snapped in the final game at TWU on Monday. Bryant is hitting .295 (13-for-44) to lead the Mustangs and also leads the team with a .456 on-base percentage. Bryant has drawn a team-leading 13 walks and has only struck out seven times this season. She is 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.

- Sophomore slugger Allie Monroe is hitting .270 batting average with six doubles, two triples, and three homers while driving in 18 runs. Monroe has the best slugging percentage among the Mustangs at .483 and she leads the team with 43 total bases this season. The Lawton, Oklahoma, native is second on the squad with a .359 on-base percentage. Monroe has scored a run in each of her last four games and leads the Stangs with 12 runs scored this season.

- Freshman outfielder Paige Gallegos has a .269 batting average with four doubles, two home runs, and 15 RBIs. Gallegos has eight multi-hit games this season, including two in the series at TWU. She hit .556 against the Pioneers (5-for-9) with a double, a homer and four RBIs in the series. The Iowa Park, Texas, native leads the team with 25 hits and is second on the team with 35 total bases. She is 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.

- Sophomore third baseman Maegan Shannon is hitting .229 and has hit safely in four of her last six games for the Mustangs. Shannon has at least one hit in 16 of her 26 games played this season.

- Nunez, a senior shortstop, opened the season with a six-game hitting streak and has at least one hit in 19 of her 30 games for the Mustangs. Nunez is third on the team with 21 hits, and the transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce has four doubles and a triple this season with six RBIs. Nunez played for head coach Brittanie Talley at Vernon Junior College.

- Sophomore catcher Megan Ayala is hitting .221 with an on-base percentage of .308. Ayala has hit four doubles and has six RBIs for the Mustangs. She is leading the LSC with eight sacrifice bunts this season. Ayala has thrown out 9 of 26 base stealers and has only committed three errors behind the plate this season.

- Junior first baseman Myranda Jimenez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in a 5-0 win at UTPB on March 3, giving her three extra-base hits for the season. Jimenez was All-Kansas College Athletic Conference and won a KCAC Gold Glove Award last season at Bethany College under the direction of MSU assistant coach Apdiel Vazquez.

- Senior Kennedy Cameron (1-6) leads the MSU effort in the circle, posting a 4.20 ERA. The Longview native has allowed 33 earned runs on 40 hits with 56 strikeouts and 46 walks in 55 innings. She ranks fifth in the LSC with a .197 opponent batting average. Cameron threw 126 pitches in a one-hit shutout against UTPB. She struck out 12 Falcons and only issued two walks in the 5-0 win on March 3. Cameron has the 11th-most strikeouts in the conference and is averaging 7.2 strikeouts per seven innings pitched, which is seventh-best in the LSC.

Addison Lindemann (2-8) leads the team with 16 appearances in the circle and has thrown the most innings among Mustang pitchers with 72 1/3 innings pitched. In her last four appearances Lindemann has 1.83 ERA, allowing just two earned runs over 17 2/3 innings. For the season, Lindemann has a 4.65 ERA. The freshman from Holliday, Texas, has thrown a team-leading five complete games, including an eight-inning outing at TWU, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks in a 2-1 triumph. She also worked 1 2/3 innings of relief in the final game of the series at TWU and allowed just one hit in the 3-1 loss. Lindemann threw a complete game two-hitter against No. 6-ranked UT Tyler on March 9 and allowed just two earned runs. The right-hander had four strikeouts and three walks in the 4-3 loss to the Patriots. Lindemann had a season-high seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss at UTPB on March 2. Lindemann pitched the final two innings of a 6-5 eight-inning win at UTPB in the nightcap on March 2 and earned her first win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out three Falcons. Lindemann made her collegiate debut as a relief pitcher against Colorado Mesa at Scrap Yard Sports in Conroe, Texas. Lindemann worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out six Mavericks in the 4-3 loss on Feb. 2. The following day, Lindemann worked 8 2/3 innings of relief without allowing an earned run on four hits with six strikeouts in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to Rogers State. Lindemann threw a season-high 149 pitches against the Hillcats. She also contributes the Mustangs offense, Lindemann is 5-for-23 at the plate (.217) with a double and two RBIs this season.

- Midwestern State has turned 10 double plays this season, which is seventh-most in the LSC and 38th-most among NCAA Division II programs.

- Mustang batters have laid down 20 sacrifice bunts, which is fifth-most in the conference and 42nd-most in the nation.

- MSU is 2-8 in one-run games this season and 2-4 in extra-inning contests.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES | Oklahoma Christian (18-14, 14-10) has a three-game losing streak and is 8-4 on the road this season. The Eagles were swept by UT Tyler last weekend, including a 6-5 loss in 10 innings to open the series. The Patriots won the next two games, 9-0 and 12-4 (6)… OC is 10th in the conference with a team batting average of .259 and sixth in the league with a team ERA of 3.06... Kadence Brewster, a sophomore from Wichita, Kansas, is hitting .320 to lead the Eagles' offense. Brewster has a team-leading seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. She also leads the club with 15 RBIs… Kristen Whitehouse has a five-game hitting streak, which started with a 3-for-3 performance in a 3-2 win at UTPB on March 13. Whitehouse is hitting .293 (27-for-92) for the Eagles this season and has only struck out three times, making her the third toughest player to strike out in the LSC this season. Whitehouse has four doubles, two triples and 14 RBIs… Aaliyah Brown is hitting .288 with two home runs and 13 RBIs this season. Brown leads the team with a .447 on-base percentage… Senior Brooklin Bain, who is also an All-LSC basketball player from Comanche, Oklahoma, is hitting .314 in 23 games and leads the team with three home runs. She also has four doubles and a triple, slugging a team-leading .529 this season. Bain is tied for second on the team with 37 total bases and has the fourth-most RBIs with 11… Kiley Brewster is hitting .281 with five doubles, two triples and a homer. She also has 37 total bases for the Eagles and is slugging .490… Jill Dickson is 9-4 with a 3.38 ERA and has only allowed 70 hits over 93 1/3 innings in the circle. She has thrown eight complete games and made 15 starts among her 19 appearances for OC this year… Dickson has the only save of the season for the Eagles. Opponents are hitting just .211 against Dickson, which is eighth in the LSC. Dickson has recorded the seventh-most strikeouts in the LSC with 65 and issued 48 walks this season… Grace Anderson is 8-7 with a 3.53 ERA over 94 1/3 innings. Anderson has struck out 55 batters and issued 32 walks in 20 appearances, including 13 starts for the Eagles. Anderson is holding opponents to a .239 batting average…Oklahoma Christian is third in the league with a fielding percentage of .972… The Eagles have shutout opponents six times this season, which is fifth-most in the LSC and 25th among D2 programs…

NEXT UP | Midwestern State is on the road to face Eastern New Mexico for a three-game series at Greyhound Softball Field. The series begins Thursday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. CDT and the final game of the series is scheduled for noon CDT on Friday. Midwestern State returns home on April 6 to face Western New Mexico.
