Kayla Bryant with a base hit down the third-base line as Midwestern State scored three runs in the sixth inning, but Fort Hays State held on for a 5-4 victory in the opener of the Mustangs Round-Up at Wichita Falls Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
Monroe, a sophomore from Lawton, Oklahoma, now has 10 RBIs and is among the conference leaders. She was 1-for-3 and scored a run after reaching on an error. Freshman right fielder
Paige Gallegos hit an RBI double that scored Monroe from second base in the fourth inning after the Mustangs fell behind, 4-0.
Sarah Tiffany drew a one-out walk in the first inning, and she scored the first run of the game for Fort Hays State on a Loren Beggs single to left field.
The Tigers opened the third inning with three straight singles. After Carly Stuke drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson doubled down the right-field line, scoring the third run of the inning.
Freshman
Addison Lindemann started in the circle for MSU and lasted three innings as Fort Hays State scored four earned runs on eight hits. Lindemann walked two batters and a recorded a strikeout as her record fell to 0-3.
Zoe Isom pitched two scoreless innings for the Mustangs, and
Sydney Gonzales allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work.
Savanah Egger earned the win with a complete game performance for Fort Hays State. Egger allowed four runs on four hits, but only one of the runs was earned, and she struck out eight Mustangs in the season opener for the Tigers.
Senior second baseman
Chloe Bryant hit in the leadoff spot and scored a run after she doubled in the sixth inning. Bryant has a hit in five of the seven games for the Mustangs and has scored a run in all but one game. Bryant is hitting .261 with an on-base percentage of .320 through her first seven games of the season.
Midwestern State is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Wichita Falls Softball Complex on Saturday. The first game against Northwestern Oklahoma State gets underway at 11 a.m., and then the Mustangs will get a rematch with Fort Hays State at 3:30 p.m.
