No. 1 WT turns Wise in win over Mustangs

CANYON, Texas -- West Texas A&M's Larry Wise poured in a season-high 32 points and the No. 1-ranked Buffs won their 17th-consecutive game, beating Midwestern State 89-62 Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center.

WT improved to 20-1 while staying perfect in Lone Star Conference play at 14-0.

MSU suffered its third consecutive setback, falling to 12-9 on the season and 6-9 in league play. The Mustangs remain two games behind UT Permian Basin for the eighth and final berth in next month's LSC Postseason Tournament at Comerica Center in Frisco.

Wise connected on 10-of-16 shots from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Waxahachie native has scored at least 20 points in each of his last six outings.

Ten different players connected on a 3-pointer and all but one of the 13 Buffs making an appearance Saturday hit the score line. WT shot 50.9 percent from the floor as a team, but even better beyond arc connecting a 51.7-percent clip at 15-of-29.

Midwestern State enjoyed a fast start and led by as many as six points after Braedon Biggott polished off an 11-2 run with a 3-pointer to give the Mustangs a 25-19 advantage with 8:33 to play in the opening half.

West Texas A&M used mini-runs of 8-0 and 10-0 to put away the game in the second half and led by as many as 27 points.

Junior forward Reggie Hill was the lone player in double figures for the Mustangs with a season-high 19 points. Pierre Sanders and Bakari LaStrap finished with nine points each.

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night against Eastern New Mexico. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
