ODESSA, Texas -- Midwestern State and UT Permian Basin square off in a three-game Lone Star Conference series Saturday and Sunday at the UTPB Softball Field.
The Mustangs and Falcons play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 2 and 4 p.m. before closing the series with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
SERIES HISTORY | Midwestern State and UT Permian Basin meet for the 25th, 26th, and 27th time on the diamond this weekend in Odessa. The Mustangs own an 18-6 edge in the series which dates back to the 2012 season. UTPB took two out of three from the Mustangs last season in Wichita Falls after the teams split a twin bill in Odessa in 2022.
Mustangs Notes
- Midwestern State (2-19, 0-12 LSC) searches for its first Lone Star Conference win this weekend in Odessa. The Mustangs have dropped their last 15 games, including the first 12 in league play.
- Sophomore
Allie Monroe leads the MSU attack and ranks 28th in the Lone Star Conference with a .339 batting average. The Lawton, Oklahoma, native has accounted for five doubles, two triples, and three homers while driving in 17 runs.
- Freshman outfielder
Paige Gallegos slugged her first collegiate homer -- a three-run shot to left field -- as part of a 2-for-3 effort against Cameron on February 25. She followed that with a three-hit effort in the opener against No. 2-ranked West Texas A&M on February 27. For the season, she is second on the squad in batting average at .258 with three doubles, a homer, and 10 RBI.
- Sophomore catcher
Megan Ayala is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with three doubles and three RBIs over her last five games which includes two-hit efforts against Cameron and West Texas A&M.
- Junior outfielder
Brianna Dominguez has reached base in each of the last five games and scored three runs.
- Senior
Kennedy Cameron leads the MSU effort in the circle, posting a 3.28 ERA. The Longview native has allowed 15 earned runs on 24 hits with 31 strikeouts and 26 walks in 32 innings. She enjoyed her best start of the season on February 23, holding Cameron to two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in the series opener. Cameron made a pair of relief appearances over MSU's last five games. She ranks eighth in the LSC with a .205 opponent batting average.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS | UT Permian Basin (3-15, 0-9 LSC) has lost nine straight and are winless in nine Lone Star Conference games. The Falcons have suffered shutouts in each of their last seven games while managing a total of 13 hits. UTPB has not scored since pushing across a run in the first inning of a 12-1 loss to Angelo State on February 21 -- a stretch of 46 innings. Senior Stephanie Jimenez leads the Falcons' attack with a .314 batting average with a two doubles and three RBIs, while sophomore Gabrielle Cabrera is hitting .313 with three doubles and six RBIs. Senior Destini Trahan is the Falcons' top option in the circle, posting a 5.25 ERA allowing 28 earned runs on 43 hits with 17 strikeouts and 28 walks in 37 1/3 innings.
