DURANT, Okla. -- Midwestern State won five of six singles matches and improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 5-2 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at Southeastern Tennis Complex.
The Savage Storm opened the dual match by earning the doubles point.
The pairing of Juan Gonzalez and Marin Jurkovic upended
Luis Diaz Argente and
Stephen Slocombe at No. 1 doubles, 7-5.
Killian Guillou and
Germano Setti dropped a tiebreak, 7-6 (7), to Stipan Madzar and Thabo Ncube at No. 2 doubles.
Juan David Duque and
Marcal Miret Avante gave MSU an early advantage with a 6-4 victory over Gen Naraya and Marcus Del Rosario at No. 3 doubles.
Slocombe wasted little time pulling the Mustangs even with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Naraya at No. 4 singles. Slocombe, a junior from Barbados, improved to 2-1 in singles, matching his record in doubles with Diaz.
Philip Kamara remained unscathed and gave MSU a 2-1 lead with his third consecutive singles victory. The sophomore from Romania cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Luke Tinnock at No. 5 singles. Kamara posted victories at No. 6 singles in his first two matches of the season.
Diaz, a senior from Spain, earned his first singles win of the season as he dispatched Madzar, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Diaz suffered straight-set losses against Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist at No. 3 singles in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, last weekend.
Setti played No. 1 singles for the third straight dual match and forced a third set against Gonzalez but fell to 0-3 at the start of the season with a 1-6, 6-4, 2-6 loss.
Freshman
Bruno Sanchez from Spain won his debut match at No. 6 singles over Luis Ching, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, and clinched the victory for the Mustangs
Killian Guillou prevailed in a three-set tussle with Ncube. The sophomore from Paris, France, was forced into a third set at No. 3 singles after dropping a tiebreak but improved to 2-1 for the season with a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3 victory. Guillou split a pair of matches at No. 2 singles in Arkadelphia last weekend.
Midwestern State will face West Alabama, Auburn-Montgomery and West Florida at the UT Tyler Invitational next weekend.
