Midwestern State travels to Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State continues its six-game road trek to begin the conference campaign at Lubbock Christian. The Mustangs face the Lady Chaps at Maner Park on Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (2-10, 0-3) opened conference play at Angelo State and lost the opener 3-0 despite outhitting the Rambelles, 6-1. Mikey Dominguez led the Mustangs with two hits, and Kennedy Cameron allowed one run on one hit in 5 1/3 innings. She issued five walks and notched five strikeouts.

Addison Lindemann held Angelo State scoreless on one hit through the first five innings in the second game of the series, but the Mustangs stranded nine runners and fell to the Rambelles, 3-1. Lindemann surrendered three runs on four hits over six innings.

Kayla Bryant paced the Mustangs' five-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in the series finale, but Ashton Dirner drove in five runs to spur Angelo State to a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

Allie Monroe is hitting .378 with three multi-hit games and leads the Mustangs with a .541 slugging percentage. Monroe has three doubles and a home run. The sophomore from Lawton, Oklahoma, leads the team with 11 RBIs. She extended her hitting streak to six games with a single in the sixth inning of the first game at Angelo State.

Freshman Paige Gallegos has been playing primarily in right field and is hitting .297 through 12 games. Gallegos was 3-for-9 with a double and an RBI in the three-game series at Angelo State. The native of Iowa Park, Texas, is second on the team with five RBIs.

Maegan Shannon, a sophomore from Frisco, Texas, has started 10 games at third base and is hitting .241 with seven singles and two RBIs. Shannon has only committed one error on 30 chances at the hot corner.

Camile Nunez, a senior shortstop, has at least one hit in nine of 12 games with two doubles for the Mustangs and is hitting .270. Nunez has 30 put outs and a team-leading 29 assists on 65 chances at shortstop. The transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce has turned four double plays for the Mustangs, who are second in the conference and seventh in the nation with six twin killings through 12 games.

Megan Ayala has been the starting catcher for 11 games this season and has not committed an error with only two passed balls. She has thrown out four of 11 potential base stealers. At the plate, the sophomore from Denton, Texas, is hitting .227 with two RBIs for the Mustangs.

Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Uhl (1-3) from Arvada, Colorado, has a 3.65 ERA through 15 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 19 hits with five walks and nine strikeouts. Her longest outing of the season came at Mustangs Park, where she lasted 6 2/3 and took a hard-luck 4-2 loss to East Central, which plated three unearned runs in the seventh inning.

Freshman Addison Lindemann (0-4) from Holliday, Texas, leads the pitching staff with 19 strikeouts through 29 innings. Lindemann has made five appearances with three starts and has a 2.66 ERA. She has allowed 27 hits with 14 walks and 11 earned runs.

Kennedy Cameron (0-2), a senior pitcher from Longview, Texas, has made four starts for Midwestern State this season and has a 4.20 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .211 against Cameron, who has allowed 15 hits over 20 innings. The right-hander has walked 18 batters and struck out 17.

Sydney Gonzales (1-0) has been extremely effective as a relief pitcher for the Mustangs. Gonzales has made six appearances and thrown 10 2/3 innings, allowing just eight hits and three earned runs. The sophomore from Lenorah, Texas, has a 1.97 ERA and is holding opponents to a .211 batting average. She has issued seven walks with three strikeouts.

Lubbock Christian (2-5, 1-2) leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 8-4, and has won the last seven meetings, including two 9-0 victories and a 9-4 triumph last season at Mustangs Park. MSU is 2-3 all-time when visiting the Lady Chaps but has not made the trip since April of 2021, when Lubbock Christian swept a doubleheader, 8-0 and 11-4.

The Lady Chaps opened the season at the Gulf Shores Invitational and lost their first three games before defeating West Florida, 10-4.

Lubbock Christian dropped two of its three games against Oklahoma Christian at Maner Park to begin conference play. LCU stranded 10 runners, and the Eagles won the opener, 3-1. The Lady Chaps took the second game of the series, 6-0, as Teoni Lamb went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and recording one strike out.

Lubbock Christian was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-13 with runners on base, as Oklahoma Christian won the rubber game of the series on Saturday, 6-0. The game time temperature was 28 degrees with a 17-degree wind chill factor.

The Lady Chaps are hitting .283 as a team and are averaging 2.57 runs per game. The pitching staff is fifth in the conference with a 2.59 ERA.

Senior outfielder Hope Banales is hitting .391 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored for the Lady Chaps. Banales is also 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts.

Tiarra Delrosario, a fifth-year senior utility player, is hitting .381 with eight singles and a double this season. Delrosario has a six-game hitting streak and has two multi-hit games this season.

Senior outfielder Kamryn Gibbs has a four-game hitting streak and is batting .333 for the Lady Chaps. She was 4-for-8 in the series against Oklahoma Christian and was 2-for-3 against West Florida to begin her four-game hitting streak.

Sophomore catcher Amanda Valdiviezo and junior designated player Bailey Hughes have hit the only two home runs for Lubbock Christian. Senior first baseman Ally Oyanguren leads the club with four RBIs. Hughes has three RBIs, and Valdiviezo has driven home two runs this season.

Lamb (1-1) has made two starts and allowed two earned runs on 11 hits over 14 innings for Lubbock Christian. The junior from Australia has not issued a walk and has two strike outs this season. Lamb is third in the conference with a 1.00 ERA and her 0.79 WHIP is second in the LSC.

Maxine Valdez (1-2) has made three starts and allowed five earned runs on 13 hits over 16 innings. The fifth-year senior recorded eight strike outs in a 1-0 loss to Valdosta State in the season opener.

Daren Hays is in his 14th season as the head coach at Lubbock Christian and boasts a record of 525-179 (.746). Las season, the Lady Chaps were 40-17 and were the No. 5 seed in the Tyler Bracket of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. It was the first-ever 40-win season for the Lady Chaps.

Brittanie Talley is beginning her third season as the head coach at Midwestern State and is the third coach in the history of the program. Talley amassed a 129-75 record (.632) over five seasons at Vernon College earning Texoma NexStar Small College Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the Chaps to a 42-12 mark and advancing to the NJCAA regional tournament.

Midwestern State returns home to host Cameron in a three-game series that begins with a doubleheader on Friday. The first game gets underway at 2 p.m. The series closes on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. game at Mustangs Park.
