Mustangs fight back to beat Angelo State to keep postseason hopes alive

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State's Kertisa Amos poured in 21 points including the go-ahead jumper with 51.7 seconds to play to lift the Mustangs to a 75-73 win over Angelo State Saturday afternoon at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

The win was MSU's first at the Junell Center since 2017, but more importantly kept the Mustangs in the hunt for a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.

Midwestern State (7-18, 7-12 LSC) is in a tie for ninth place in the league standings with Texas A&M-Kingsville and just one game behind Cameron and Arkansas-Fort Smith for the eighth and final spot.

The Mustangs finish the regular season with home games against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday and Texas A&M International on Saturday before traveling to Lawton to face Cameron the following Thursday.

If MSU wins out, it would control tiebreakers over Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville, but would need Arkansas-Fort Smith to lose two of its final three games. The Lions hit the road to face Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico next week before closing the campaign at home against Oklahoma Christian.

The Mustangs overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth period and Zarria Carter finished off a 7-0 run with a traditional three-point play on a put back to give the Mustangs a 73-69 lead with 2:04 to play.

Angelo State rallied with consecutive layups by Madeline Stephens and Olivia Pedigo to tie the game at 73-73 with 1:12 to play.

But Amos worked her way to left wing and hit a 15-footer with 55.7 seconds to play as the Mustangs regained the advantage.

The teams exchanged turnovers on the next two possessions and the Mustangs denied Angelo State so much as a shot after calling its final timeout with nine seconds to play.

Amos finished with her fifth 20-point performance of the season, while Carter contributed 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Junior guard Nikki Green pitched in 14 points, including 10 in the second half, while sophomore Catalina Cortez knocked down three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.

Stephens led the Rambelles with a career-high 29 points on 13-of-16 shooting, while completing her seventh double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.

ASU senior Sawyer Lloyd turned in an all-around performance with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
