Defensive effort leads Midwestern State past Rattlers

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State held St. Mary's (Texas) to just 34 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 61-56 victory against the Rattlers at home Sunday.

The Mustangs (3-7, 1-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Zarria Carter, who had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Kerbie Cash added 12 points and two steals. Carisa Cortez helped out with 10 points.

Carter pulled down three of the 13 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second-chance points for Midwestern State.

How It Happened

Midwestern State scored 10 of its 15 first-quarter points in the paint and took a 15-12 lead into the second quarter.

Midwestern State extended its lead to seven points in the second quarter as Emillia Steele scored a fast-break layup with 5:45 remaining in the period to give the Mustangs a 22-15 lead. The Rattlers cut into that lead, but the Mustangs still enjoyed a 26-20 advantage heading into halftime. 

St. Mary's then took a 36-32 lead following intermission before Midwestern State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Cortez, to grab a 37-36 lead with 2:35 to go in the third. The Mustangs held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 42-41 edge. Midwestern State scored eight points off seven turnovers by the Ratters in the third quarter.

St. Mary's proceeded to take a 56-52 lead before Midwestern State went on a 9-0 run to close out the game. Midwestern State pulled down four offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter, and five of the 19 points scored in the period came on second-chance opportunities.

After Midwestern State had fallen behind with 2:59 remaining in the game, Calyssa Sevier hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining that put the Mustangs in front to stay.

» St. Mary's freshman Christin Callens came into the game leading the Rattlers with 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, but the Mustangs held her to five points and four rebounds. 
» The Midwestern State defense forced 25 turnovers and scored 23 points off those turnovers.
» The game featured seven ties and 14 lead changes.
» Midwestern State outscored the Rattlers in the paint, 28-16.
» St. Mary's had one more rebound than the Mustangs, 36-35.
