WICHITA FALLS, TX --Pierre Sanders and Reggie Hill each recorded double-doubles to help lead the Midwestern State men's basketball team past the Adams State Grizzlies 119-114 in double overtime at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday.
The Mustangs (3-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Mason Gibson, who had 33 points and four assists. Sanders added a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists and Hill helped out with a double-double off the bench with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Midwestern State was 20-of-36 from 3-point range, setting a school record for 3-pointers made in a single game.
Midwestern State had 27 assists on 41 made field goals. Sanders' 10 assists led the Mustangs.
Midwestern State did a great job disrupting Adams State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Will Shepherd's two rejections led the way individually for the Mustangs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 23-19, Midwestern State went on an 8-0 run with 11:55 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Gibson, to take a 27-23 lead. The Mustangs then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 42-39 advantage. Midwestern State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 42 points.
Following intermission, Midwestern State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 52-47 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Jonathan Jackson's three, to grow the lead to 61-47 with 12:48 to go in the contest. The Grizzlies then fought back to even things up at 89-89 and send the game to overtime. Midwestern State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting 10 shots from deep to score 30 of its 47 points.
Adams State then snagged a 91-89 advantage with 4:08 left in the first overtime before Midwestern State responded by going on a 7-0 run to seize a 96-91 lead with 2:30 to go in the period. The Grizzlies fought back to extend the matchup, but Midwestern State pulled away in the second overtime to pick up the 119-114 win.
