Sharpshooting Mustangs roll to 81-67 win over Western Colorado in home opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Led by a 60 percent shooting effort from beyond the 3-point arc, Midwestern State defeated Western Colorado, 81-67, Friday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs (2-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Mason Gibson, who had 23 points and two steals. Pierre Sanders added 13 points, four assists and three steals and Will Shepherd added seven points, nine rebounds and two steals.

The Midwestern State offense was strong from beyond the arc, knocking down nine threes on 15 attempts. Jonathan Jackson hit three treys to lead the Mustangs.

The Mustangs return to action Saturday night against Adams State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

How It Happened

After playing to a 10-10 tie, Midwestern State went on an 8-0 run with 13:17 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jackson, to take an 18-10 lead. The Mustangs then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 38-28 advantage. Midwestern State capitalized on six Western Colorado turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Midwestern State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 48-35 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Jackson's three, to grow the lead to 56-35 with 14:54 to go in the contest. The Mountaineers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Mustangs still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-67 win. Midwestern State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 43 points in the lane.
