WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- After closing the regular season by winning three of its last four conference matches, Midwestern State is hosting a quarterfinal match in the Lone Star Conference Championship. The Mustangs welcome St. Mary's to Stang Park on Tuesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State enters the postseason with a 10-3-5 overall record and a 6-2-5 mark in conference, which placed the Mustangs fourth in the LSC standings. The Mustangs won their regular season finale at West Texas A&M, 1-0.
St. Mary's won four of its final five matches in the regular season and is coming off a 1-0 victory over UT Permian Basin. The Rattlers arrive in Wichita Falls with a 9-6-3 overall record, and the No. 5 seed in the postseason tournament is 7-4-2 in conference play.
The schools met at Stang Park earlier this season and played a 1-1 draw. Alexis Truitt gave St. Mary's the lead with a goal in the 61st minute, and
Lillia Besedin scored the equalizer for MSU in the 79th minute.
Each team had six shots on goal during the regular season match-up, but St. Mary's took 19 total shots, and Midwestern State finished with 15 total shots. The Mustangs took seven corner kicks, and the Rattlers had one in the last meeting.
The all-time series is knotted, 7-7-3, but the Mustangs have only one win in the last five meetings. All three losses in that span have been by one goal, including an overtime defeat. The Mustangs also pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory in San Antonio four years ago.
Midwestern State is 3-2-3 when hosting St. Mary's, but this is the first postseason meeting between the two sides.
Midwestern State has a plus-18 goal differential this season, outscoring opponents, 38-20, and in the second half of matches, MSU has outscored its opponents, 25-10.
Goalkeeper
Allison Dellis has a 1.19 goals-against average and has made 88 saves with a save percentage of .822 through 16 matches for the Mustangs. Dellis is 8-3-5 and has posted three clean sheets.
Senior
Cassidy Savoy leads the team with a career-high seven goals and has added two assists this season. Savoy has 21 goals and 11 assists in her career at Midwestern State.
Madison Brinkley and Nexalee Munoz have each scored six goals for the Mustangs.
Lexi Beck leads the Stangs with 19 points, and the senior from Fort Worth, Texas, has surpassed Kari Bristow for the program's career record with 26 assists. Beck improved to 6-for-6 from the penalty spot during her career at MSU as she converted a PK in the 63rd minute at West Texas A&M for her seventh game-winning goal at MSU.
Midwestern State is 6-0-3 at home this season. The Mustangs outscored visitors, 25-8, with two clean sheets and only once conceded more than a single goal at home — a 2-2 draw with top-seeded Angelo State.
Shelby Paniagua, who was a D2CCA All-American last season, is second in the conference with 22 points for the Rattlers. The junior from Cibolo, Texas, scored eight goals, including a hat trick in a 3-2 win over Oklahoma Christian. She also had six assists in her 18 regular season appearances.
Malia Dominguez and Alexis Truitt each had five goals for St. Mary's during the regular season, and Natalie Gonzalez added four goals. Dominguez had a pair of two-goal games, and Truitt scored twice in a 3-0 win at Texas A&M International on Oct. 29.
Goalkeeper Rebecca Difronzo started 16 games for the Rattlers and posted four clean sheets. Difronzo has a 6-6-3 record with a 1.38 goals-against average. The senior from Italy has made 63 saves and has a .759 save percentage this season.
In four previous appearances against the Mustangs, Difronzo is 2-1-1 with 13 saves and a goals-against average of 1.67.
St. Mary's has a plus-5 goal differential, outscoring its opponents, 29-24. The Rattlers have scored 19 goals in the second half this season while conceding 13 goals during the final 45 minutes of matches.
The winner of the quarterfinal match faces top-seeded Angelo State in the semifinals at LeGrand Soccer Complex in San Angelo, Texas, on Friday at 5 p.m.
