WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State opened the conference campaign with three straight losses on the heels of a three-match winning streak. The Mustangs enter their match on Friday night with a 6-8 record overall and face the last team they beat ā Sul Ross State.
The Lobos visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum for the first time as members of the Lone Star Conference, and first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Sul Ross has not visited Midwestern State since 1995, when the Lobos won a five-set marathon.
Prior to their meeting at the LSC Challenge in Portales, New Mexico, MSU had not faced Sul Ross since a 3-0 win at Brownswood, Texas, in a 1997 neutral-site clash at Howard Payne.
Riley Rabedeaux had 16 kills, and the Mustangs hit .369 en route to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 win over the Lobos during the LSC Challenge at Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 21.
The rematch comes 13 days later, and this one counts in the conference standings.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Lobos, 10-4.
Rabedeaux and
Demi Stauffenberg are both among the top-25 LSC players in kills per set. Rabedeaux is 16th with 3.16 kills per set, and Stauffenberg is 24th in the league with 2.76 kills per set.
Rabedeaux leads the Stangs and is 18th in the LSC with 3.41 points per set.
Brooke Parker is eighth in the league with 6.38 assists per set, and she has the 10th-most total assists in the conference with 236 through 40 sets.
Isabella Dickens is the leading hitter for the Mustangs, and the sophomore is 12th in the LSC with a hitting percentage of .309.
Dickens and
Gabrielle Oos are tied for the team lead with nine solo blocks. Oos has 38 blocks this season, which is eighth-most in the conference. Dickens has been in on 31 blocks for the Mustangs.
As a team, the Mustangs are averaging 2.07 blocks per set.
Midwestern State is fifth in the LSC with 16.75 digs per set, and
Jenna Redding is the team leader with 3.66 digs per set, which ranks as 13th-most in the conference. Redding has a total of 161 digs, and
Amy DeWalt is second on team with 132 total digs.
The Mustangs have been able to extend rallies. MSU is third in the nation and leads the conference with 40.7 attacks per set. Southwest Minnesota State leads Division II programs in the category at 41.35 and is 13-0 this season.
Sul Ross arrives with a 1-7 overall record and is 1-1 in conference play after defeating St. Edward's in the conference opener last Friday, 3-1. The Lobos are coming off a 3-0 loss to St. Mary's and have lost their two true road matches this season.
Dating back to last season, Sul Ross has a six-match losing streak on the road. Its last road victory was in four sets at Southwest (New Mexico) on Oct. 10, 2023.
Natalie Hernandez leads the Lobos with 87 points and 3.19 kills per set. Eliana Mata is averaging 7.18 assists per set.
Edi Coleman has 17 blocks to lead Sul Ross, which is averaging 0.82 blocks per set. Coleman has all three solo blocks for the Lobos.
Sul Ross is sixth in the conference with 16.54 digs per set. Tatyana Colon leads the team with 100 total digs and 3.57 digs per set.
Midwestern State is on the road for its next match. The Mustangs travel to Silver City, New Mexico, to battle Western New Mexico on Drag's Court. First serve is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 :30 p.m.
