CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State is unbeaten in its last five matches and travels to The Pitch on the campus of West Texas A&M to renew its rivalry with the Buffaloes. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The Mustangs are coming off a 2-0 victory over Sul Ross State and improved to 9-1-3 overall with a 4-1-1 conference record. MSU is trailing St. Mary's by five points atop the conference standings.
Midwestern State is 4-1-2 on the road this season with its only loss coming at St. Edward's on Oct. 2. The Mustangs are 4-0-1 since that 5-0 defeat at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
The Mustangs have the second-best goal differential in the conference at plus-13 and lead the league with 30 goals this season. The Mustangs also lead the league with 2.08 assists per game and 87 total points.
Mere Escobar has scored 12 goals this season and is the sixth-leading goal scorer in the country among NCAA Division II players. The senior from Austin, Texas, also leads the team with six assists and is sixth in the nation with 30 points.
Escobar has 56 career goals at Midwestern State and is the third all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the program. Only Alvin Alexander and Kris Henderson have scored more goals wearing the Maroon & Gold. Alexander netted 58 goals from 1975-1978, and Henderson scored 58 goals from 1987-1990.
Liam Pritchard has five assists, and
Jaime Villagomez has assisted on three goals for the Stangs this season.
Gabriel Gacovicaj,
Anthony Perea and Tea Cooper each have a goal and two assists.
Ethan Krchnak and
Skyler Krchnak each have two assists.
Opponents have scored 1.31 goals per match against the Mustangs.
Daniel Robles has been the goalkeeper during the five-match unbeaten streak for MSU and is 4-0-3 this season. The 6-2 junior from Tyler, Texas, has a 1.18 goals-against average with 20 saves and a save percentage of .690 in eight appearances. Robles has posted back-to-back clean sheets and has not conceded a goal in 224 minutes.
Head coach
Michael Meachum is closing in on 100 career victories. In his seventh season at the helm, Meachum is 97-20-12.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with West Texas A&M, 39-23-5, and won its last four meetings with the Buffaloes, including a 2-1 victory in a non-conference match at Stang Park on Sept. 25.

Samuele Muroni's goal in the 47th minute before scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.

West Texas A&M is 3-6-4 overall with a 1-2-3 conference record following a 1-0 victory at Lubbock Christian on Wednesday.
The Buffaloes are still seeking their first home victory of the season. WT is 0-2-1 at The Pitch after suffering a 2-0 loss to Sul Ross State on Oct. 12. Three of their final four matches will be played on home turf.
Opponents have outscored the Buffaloes, 16-15, this season. West Texas A&M has been outscored in the second half, 14-7, and suffered four one-goal losses this season.
Goalkeepers Bryce Cottle and Luke Southerington have each appeared in seven matches and have each allowed eight goals. Southerington is 1-2-4 with two shutouts and has a goals-against average of 1.17 with a save percentage of .742. Cottle is 2-4-0 with a 1.31 a goals-against average and a .704 save percentage.
Matteo Landais is the goal-scoring leader for West Texas A&M with four goals on 22 shots. Gabriel Nevarez has added two goals with three assists. Dominic Murphy has three assists, and three players each have a goal and an assist for the Buffaloes.
West Texas A&M has been called for 149 fouls and has been issued 33 yellow cards this season.
Midwestern State returns to Stang Park to face Lubbock Christian on Oct. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
