SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State's
Mere Escobar extended his magical goal scoring run and the fifth-ranked Mustangs controlled possession on the way to a 2-1 win over No. 16 St. Mary's Wednesday night at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
MSU rolled to its fourth consecutive win to move to 6-0-1 on the season, while sending the Rattlers to 4-2-1.
Escobar extended his goal scoring streak to seven matches in the 68th minute. The Austin native won a ball at the top of the box, took one touch, and buried a left-footed shot past St. Mary's keeper Andre Schlaefli to the upper-right corner of the net.
Escobar's NCAA Division II leading ninth goal of the season gave the Mustangs a commanding 2-0 lead. Further, he has scored in 10 of his last 11 matches dating back to last season including four goals at Sigma Beta Chi Field during the run.
In his last 14 matches, Escobar has accounted for 15 goals and four assists.
But, it was
Max Gonzales that provided the opener in the 22nd minute of the match.
Sophomore
Conner Lewis received a ball in the left forward channel and struck a cross to the far post. Gonzales ran on to the ball for his first goal of the season to give the Mustangs the early lead.
MSU controlled the run of play with a 65-35 possession split which resulted in a 16-8 advantage in shots.
St. Mary's took advantage of a penalty to allow Gael Gallegos to score the Rattler's lone goal of the match.

Adam Braman made three saves to improved to 16-6-3 over the last two seasons between the posts.
Midwestern State takes on rival West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
