WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's goal scoring magician just keeps finding ways to deliver.
Senior
Mere Escobar worked a give-and-go with teammate
Maycol Reyes then toe-poked a goal past West Texas A&M goalkeeper Asaf Kristal to lift MSU to a 1-0 win over the Buffs.
Escobar's first career goal against arch-rival WT came in the 31st minute and was after the Buffs were forced to go with 10 men following Elhadj Diaone's ejection for serious foul play in the act of taking down MSU midfielder
Dereck Espinal 10 minutes before the goal.
Escobar scored his 10th goal of the season to add to his NCAA Division II leading goal count. The Austin native has scored goals in each of MSU's eight matches this season and in 11 of 12 matches dating back to the 2022 campaign.
Incredibly, the Buffs had never bared witness to Mere's magic. Now, they have.
Following the go-ahead goal, the Mustangs made WT possession time disappear.
Midwestern controlled the ball for nearly 70 percent of the match and narrowly missed opportunities to expand the lead in the second half. Most notably, on a rifled shot by
Liam Pritchard from just inside the penalty area and header near the 6-yard box. Both shots sailed over the crossbar.
Either way, the Mustangs limited WT to three non-threatening shots allowing
Adam Braman to author his fourth clean sheet of the season without the effort of making a save.
Midwestern State (7-0-1) extended its unbeaten run to eight matches from the start of the season for a second-straight year and for the third time since
Michael Meachum took over the reins of the program to start the 2018 season.
The Mustangs close the non-conference slate Wednesday night at Oklahoma Christian. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
