WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Riley Rabedeaux continued her hot start to the 2023 season, leading the Mustangs to a split Friday in the MSU Invitational.
The junior from Poulsbo, Washington, had a match-high 12 kills in t a 25-13, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19 win over West Alabama before leading the Mustangs for the third time this season with 11 kills in a 25-15, 25-16, 25-12 loss to Central Oklahoma.
Rabedeaux proved efficient in the win over West Alabama, committing three errors on 29 swings for a 3.10 hitting percent to propel MSU to its top hitting match of the young season as the Mustangs closed the win hitting .216 as a team.
Midwestern took control from the outset versus the Tigers by hitting .214 in the opening and .381 in the second frame.
Senior
Lauryn Bourne added nine kills to go along with 10 digs, while freshman
Isabella Dickens logged six kills with a single error to hit .417.
Fellow frosh
Jaiden Wright needed just nine attempts to finish with five kills with a single miscue.
Sophomore
Taygon Jones led back-row efforts with 14 digs, while frosh
Jenna Redding had 12 digs of her own as the Mustangs limited West Alabama to a .060 team hitting performance.
Central Oklahoma sophomore Sydney Huck matched a career high with 16 kills on 32 attempts, while junior Jenna Karp added 11 kills to help the Bronchos complete an opening day sweep at the MSU Invitational.
UCO, which also swept West Alabama, received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association preseason poll after rolling to a 24-7 record in 2022.
MSU setter
Alayna Guerrero, who logged a season-high 32 assists against UWA, notched her second double-double of the weekend closing with 20 assists and 12 digs against Central Oklahoma.
Jones also notched 14 digs against the Bronchos.
The Mustangs (1-2) closed play at the Midwestern State Invitational Saturday afternoon against Western Colorado. First service is slated for 3 p.m.
