Cameron, Isom pitch gems to lead Mustangs to sweep of St. Edward's

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State received strong pitching performances from Kennedy Cameron and Zoe Isom to sweep both ends of the Lone Star Conference doubleheader against St. Edward's Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Kennedy Cameron shook off a rough start to hold the Hilltoppers to one run on six hits, while recording six strikeouts in a 4-1 win in Game 1, while Isom outdueled SEU ace Cadie Belle Currie, limiting the 'Toppers to one run on six hits with five strikeouts in a 3-1 victory in the second game.

MSU (12-36, 11-30 LSC) goes for the series sweep Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for noon. The Mustangs celebrate seniors Christine Billmeier, Paige Bryant, Bailey Brenek, and Payton Griffin in a pregame ceremony.

Midwestern State managed just two hits in the opener, but both, which came in a three-run third inning, proved productive.

Griffin drove in a run on a hard-hit ground ball off of SEU third baseman Alexis Massie's glove before Lexi Mills roped an RBI-single to right field to plate Brenek, who had reached on one of her three walks. Griffin also came into score on Katie Dillon's errant throw from right field to give the Mustangs a 4-1 edge.

Cameron Kennedy labored through a 38-pitch first inning, but worked out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam by giving up a single run. She scattered four hits over the remaining six innings to improve to 5-10 in the circle.

Kayla Bryant tied the game in the bottom of the first as the freshman drew a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a ground out. She moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on Alli Monroe's groundout to third base.

Isom was brilliant in the second game, allowing a single unearned run in the top of the first on her way to her fifth complete game of the season.

SEU's Arianna Vidales took advantage of MSU's lone miscue of the game to stake the Hilltoppers to an early advantage.

She delivered a leadoff single up the middle, then stole her 25th base of the season coming around to score on Bailey Brenek's errant throw to second.

Junior Cadie Belle Currie carried a shutout into the sixth inning for SEU on her way to a nine-strikeout performance.

Bailey Brenek broke up the shutout bid with an RBI-single to the left-field gap before Kerris Cameron lined a two-run single to left field to give the Mustangs their second doubleheader sweep of the season.

Senior Paige Bryant paced the Mustangs five-hit attack by going 2-for-2 with a stolen base in the nightcap.

St. Edward's dropped to 25-25 on the season, while moving to 19-22 in Lone Star Conference play.
