Mustangs meet UTPB in quarterfinals of LSC Tournament

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State is the No. 3 seed in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, which features the top eight men's teams based on the final conference standings. The Mustangs meet sixth-seeded UT Permian Basin in the quarterfinals at Arlington Tennis Center. The dual match begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Midwestern State is seeking its sixth title in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, and the Mustangs have been finalists in the last five conference tournaments. Last year, UT Tyler defeated MSU in the finals, 4-2. Charles Heffernan and Marcal Miret Avante are the two players remaining on the squad from that appearance last spring.

The Mustangs enter the postseason with a 13-9 record, including a 6-2 mark in conference duals. MSU is No. 32 among Division II schools in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Midwestern State defeated the Falcons at MSU Tennis Center, 6-1, when the two teams met during the regular season on April 1. The Mustangs won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches in straight sets. MSU has won the previous 11 encounters with UTPB, and the Mustangs have never allowed the Falcons to take more than two points in a dual match.

Luis Diaz Argente, ranked No. 42 in the nation, is 8-8 in the No. 1 singles position for Midwestern State and has won five of his last seven singles matches, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Patryk Kosinski of UTPB. Diaz is coming off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Anis Ramchone of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Heffernan is 6-2 against LSC opponents and has won nine of his 15 matches at No. 2 singles for the Mustangs. Heffernan defeated Takumi Katuda of UTPB earlier this month, 6-4, 6-0, and closed the regular season with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph over Juan Rosello of UAFS.

Miret is 14-7 in singles this season and has won eight of his last 10 singles matches. One of the losses came against Grzegorz Rudnicki of UTPB, who prevailed in a match tiebreak, 15-13. Miret has won his last two matches at No. 3 singles in three sets. The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, defeated Baptiste Mercier of Cameron, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Eduardo Bribiesca of UAFS, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3.

Germano Setti enters the conference tournament with a seven-match winning streak in singles and is 16-6 this season with an 8-0 record in the LSC. Setti opened the campaign with a 2-2 record at No. 3 singles and then played 12 matches in the No. 4 position with eight victories. The Brazilian won five consecutive matches at No. 5 singles, including a 6-3, 6-1 win over Paul Schwieger of UTPB. Setti defeated Killian Darneaux of UAFS, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot in his last match.

Killian Guillou, a freshman from Paris, France, won his first 11 completed matches for Midwestern State this season and finished the regular season with a 12-1 record after a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Juan Patina of UAFS. Guillou faced Roberto Arrabal of UTPB at No. 4 singles on April 1 and prevailed, 6-0, 6-1.

Stephen Slocombe is 5-2 in the No. 6 position and has won three of his last four matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jonas Krahofer of UTPB. Slocombe scored a 6-3, 7-5 win against Nicolas Retamales of UAFS in his last match for the Mustangs, improving his conference record to 3-2.

Slocombe has lost his last three doubles matches alongside Diaz, and the duo is 3-4 this season.

Setti and Miret, ranked No. 21 in the nation, lead MSU with 11 victories in doubles this season and finished with a 5-3 record against conference foes.

Heffernan and Guillou also finished 5-3 against LSC opponents in their doubles matches, but they are coming off back-to-back losses at No. 3 doubles.

Midwestern State was 35-28 overall during the regular season but with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, the Mustangs won the point against UTPB in their previous meeting. Heffernan and Guillou defeated Schwieger and Hector Flores, 6-1. Setti and Miret secured the point with a 6-3 victory over Rudnicki and Kosinski.

UTPB is 12-8 overall this season with a 3-5 record in the LSC. UTPB has won its last four dual matches, but three of those victories are against non-conference opponents. The Falcons swept McMurry and Sul Ross State, 7-0, and defeated Our Lady of the Lake, 4-1. UTPB won its last conference dual over St. Mary's, 5-2, on April 14.
