KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Freshman Andrea Martinez pitched a shutout in her first collegiate start and Matisen Onofrei belted a grand slam to help Texas A&M-Kingsville complete a series sweep of Midwestern State, 13-0 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon at Hubert Field.
The Javelinas scored six runs in the first and three in the second inning before Onofrei blasted a grand slam to put away the game in the third.
Martinez permitted two hits in five innings with two strikeouts and one walk to earn her first collegiate victory in the circle.
Texas A&M-Kingsville took advantage of three bases-loaded walks, a hit batsman, and two errors to plate six runs in the first inning.
The Javelinas took advantage of another error in the second to tack on three more unearned runs highlighted by Brylee Bilger's two-run double which followed an RBI-single by Jackie Garza to push the lead to 9-0 through two innings.
Kayla Bryant had a two-out single in the second inning, while
Chloe Bryant led off the fifth inning with a single down the right-field line to account for Midwestern State's offensive production.
Sophomore
Zoe Isom (3-6) took the loss in the circle allowing five runs on two walks and a hit in 1/3 innings.
Texas A&M-Kingsville improved to 20-18 on the season and 17-13 in league play, while the Mustangs dropped to 8-34 and 7-26.
Midwestern State plays host to St. Mary's (Texas) this weekend at Mustangs Park. The Mustangs and Rattlers play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. before closing the series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
